Support / Re: Tablet support?

As I stated back towards the top, relative (mouse) mode removes a lot of what makes a tablet great.  (and it sounds like that doesn't work for a tablet PC according to the thread originator)

So now I'm here to ask:  would it be too big a hassle to add a tablet checkbox to the config that would unlock the cursor, and poll the mouse position that way?

edit for kal: with a wacom, any tap is a left-click, and then the stylus has a button on the side fo right click.  Basically you hold the stylus just over the surface while you use it.  (which actually makes double clicks hard sometimes, since the motion of tapping or pushing the button can cause the cursor to wiggle enough that some programs register it as two separate clicks)

Also, if you're steady handed, and want to try something quite different with the game, keep your pen in the middle of the screen/tablet, and use it like a joystick to control the cursor.  (the further from the center you move, the faster the cursor will go in that direction)

The way people tend to analyze and read-into creative work has always irked me to a certain degree.

Once you get going, stick the mouse at the top of the screen near the middle.  For best results, it only takes a little bit of side-to-side motion on your part.  For the most foolproof, I believe you can actually keep the cursor at the top middle and not even move it and still make it up.  Just don't stop clicking.

"those little green pod things" are only green on the map.  And personally, I wouldn't call them little.  (Fish and bullets are little, those things are big enough to swim through)
So maybe "those blue pod things that are marked with oblong green blobs on the map"

Thought I'd  mention it since I had to stop and figure out what you were talking about.

edit: I'll probably just delete this post later in the interest of cleanliness.

I've seen that both happen and not happen on one machine I play on.  But I haven't figured out why, yet.  It might be sound related, as I was getting echoed/repeating sounds when I got the slowdown.

Meanwhile I'll dream of a ED remix

Gameplay / Re: Rank Your Favorite Forms
« on: January 09, 2008, 01:39:12 am »
Third favorite is beast form.  I didn't use the shots much because they're hard to aim, the way they sit still unless you're moving, sometimes you don't want to be moving towards the enemy to be able to shoot towards them (but I guess in those cases you shouldn't be in beast form. :P )
This is sort of a bug.  It happens if you move with the keyboard and then shoot with the mouse.  If you only move with the mouse, the beast projectiles will correctly shoot wherever your mouse cursor is pointing.  (edit: or if you last moved with the mouse)

Oh man, I just found my old ED folder, and I'd totally forgotten I'd started work on a full walkthru (with all dialog) and ascii map and creature gallery for the game.  Maybe I'll have to finish it one day.

edit:  another tip: try to hit with the outer edge of your attackamawave.  It's more reliable, and safer due to distance naturally.

That's just the kind of game it is.  As you go on, you get a secondary weapon with more range, and the primary weapon gets a little longer, but it's still brutal.  Though it actually has a learning curve, which is what's great.  Once you get the swing of things, you can rip through what used to be death with hardly a second thought.  So it's not impossible by any stretch.  (though it feels that way more than once as you play through it:  getting out of the mines if you go in there early on, the boss in the icy cave, the ever classic hume, and the guy with no vowels but two dogs to make up for it, not to mention the last boss which I never could make myself sit down and work on long enough to beat)

Oh man.  I might have to go download and play that again.

edit:  two tips: you can charge up early, and there is a backwards dash that sort of helps with dodging sometimes.  (up+jump if I recall, though it has other benefits you might be able to figure out)  And I'd suggest staying away from gamepads unless they're really quality, since the game is so unforgiving.

Yeah, it has everything to do with locking the cursor to the window.  The cool thing about a tablet is how "this point on the tablet is always this point on the screen" which makes it really easy/natural to snap the cursor around.  (well, at least for those of us who grew up holding pens and pencils in school...)  However, it also means the tablet keeps telling the game "cursor is over here"  making the game think "oh, the person must have moved the cursor all the way from the locked position to there.  Now I'll re-center it" after which the tablet again says "the cursor is over here" and the cycle repeats, making the game register HUGE cursor movement when you're actually holding the stylus in one place.

You can tell your tablet to use relative tracking for the stylus, (or use the mouse, which generally tracks that way,) but then you lose the thing that makes it so great in the first place.  So with most games you usually just end up putting away the tablet.

Support / beast shot kb/mouse bug

If you move with the keyboard, stop, then shoot with the mouse, the projectile will have no momentum in any direction.

(When moving with keys, you shoot the direction you're swimming.  When moving by mouse, you shoot toward the mouse cursor.  If you stop moving with keys, you shoot in no direction until you move with the mouse again, then it works the way it should again.)

Another extra something in the realm of cooking:  Make yourself 8 sea loaves, then experiment as much as you want with cooking.  Failure won't waste any materials since you already have 8.  Although I'd say it's more practical to just go and find all the recipes the normal way.

Well I'm glad I didn't miss anything important.

...those pairs of enemies that have a lot of health and dash towards you.
Those totally made me jump.  First time in a while, too.  After which I proceeded to pummel them mercilessly.

Gameplay / Ghost fish? (SPOILERS)
« on: January 03, 2008, 11:22:09 pm »
Alright, I just got to the pre-boss save chamber in the body, (I assume that's what it is,) and I'm taking a break to go back and explore every last thing before I try beating the game.  I  don't like ruining things for myself, but I have to ask about something:

I was down in the dark and murky depths somewhere, and I sang open a plant, and instead of an item popping, it instead had an image that looked a bit like the ghostly fish floating at the top of its stalk.  There were a couple of them swimming around there, but I couldn't seem to get any reaction to occur with anything.  I tried notes, I couldn't bubble the fish, I couldn't pick them up, I tried fish form, I tried ghost form, I tried fish from then ghost form...

I couldn't get anything to happen, and ended up killing both of the ghost fish there, so I just quit the game to save that bit for later, and haven't gone back since.  Any hints or outright spoilers?  I'm at a loss.

edit: in case it helps, here's a screenshot:

Hmm.  Perhaps the fish it resembles is spawned by opening it.  I'm not positive I've seen them elsewhere.
