Works better on Linux than Vista :D
« on: December 12, 2007, 12:14:03 am »
Just thought I'd mention that the demo runs tons better graphics and sound on my Ubuntu Linux machine (which is my main machine) than my Windows Vista laptop. Full graphical quality options especially!

Here's some screenshots.

Not surprising since Vista has turned out to be a disgraceful OS. :P

Love the screenshots by the way, the art in Aquaria never ceases to amaze me. :D

It's the ATI ones that I was having a problem with on my laptop.. Even with that fix, it's performance is still really poor.

The omega ones don't have a Vista version.. So yes the other one / the mod tool that updates to the latest version.

Don't get me wrong, it made the game playable. But performance wise it still was not very smooth, at least not compared to running it in Linux :D

I should mention the setup was as simple as the setup in Windows.

Double click the exe.. follow the setup dialog.

Shortcut placed on my desktop for me. Double click it and bam Linux Aquaria goodness.

That's really great.  Now I know if I ever actually get around to a Linux boot I'll have at least one game that works without me having to know how to do anything properly.   :o

This is probably caused by the shocking driver level OpenGL support in Vista, compared with the typically excellent support in Linux (since there isn't anything else to support anyway).

On top of this, nVidia cards typically obtain higher OGL framerates than their ATi counterparts.

Not surprising since Vista has turned out to be a disgraceful OS. :P

What I think is more disgraceful, is the people using computers they purchased back in 98 to attempt to run Vista, and then being disgruntle it runs like crap.

What's also disgraceful is how people don't even bother reading prompts or instructions and want everything to magically work.  If this is you, get a console.

New software with new features, requires new technology. If you're not packing it, don't complain that an OS is disgraceful.

My setup runs perfect. Vista Ultimate x64, 1680 x 1050 resolution. I play the game windowed with all the graphics options on at the fullest resolution avail. (1400 x 1050 I think) It runs flawless. Vista as a whole is a pretty impressive piece of software. If all you want to believe is Mac commericals then have fun living in fantasy land.

The bottom line is, if you want Vista (an OS designed for the next generation of hardware) to work well, you need current hardware.

You don't have current hardware? (which is fine) Use XP, it's a solid OS, with a proven track record.

"you need current hardware"

I do.. I bought this laptop specifically with vista and it easily meets the recommend requirements. Sure it's a laptop and not a desktop. But performance wise it sub par to XP by a lot with a significantly more resources available.

if it's running in linux fine on the same machine, it shoudl run fine on vista.

Depending on your setup (im guessing you ahve integrated video) you should turn off the UAC, and turn off Aero. How many gadgets do you have in your sidebar? Do you boot your machine and not remove any of the presupplied software when you bought it from teh manufactuer? If so then you have tons of junk taking up processing power (Dell, sony, hp are all huge culprits of this), you probably don't have any culter on your linux install as you installed it.

check your drivers, and settings.

Depending on the manufacturer of your machine, drivers might not be availible.

Say hello to cutting edge.

If your going to say something out performs something, make sure the playing field is level.
