Red Bulbs: Easy Solution!
« on: May 15, 2010, 07:56:43 am »
Are you annoyed that there is only a limited amount of red bulbs in the game?
Do you find it unreasonable that you can only create a few volcano rolls, or cold borscht?
Well I've got a pretty easy solution for all anal players out there!
Not really a full-on mod, but anyone with a little computer know-how should be able to do this:

1. Open your Aquaria install folder (i.e. C:\Program Files\Aquaria), and find the folder in it labelled "data".
2. Find the text file named "ingredients" and open it. You may want to create a backup copy in case you ruin anything.
3. Find the section headed by "==Recipes==". Insert a new line, with a new and reasonable recipe to create red bulbs. For example, "PlantBulb + RedBerry = RedBulb".
4. Save the file. Edited file must be named "ingredients".
5. Once you start up your game, you should be able to create red bulbs with whatever recipe you added.

Notes:

-I use Windows. I don't really know if it's exactly the same for other operating systems, but it shouldn't be too different.
-I have no idea what happens if you do this and start a save file with a red bulb already in your inventory.
-I have no idea what happens with the discovered recipes in save files when you remove recipes from the game.
-I have no idea what happens if you make a spelling error with a new recipe. Possibly game crash.
-The order of the recipes shown in-game are the reverse of the order in the text file.
-Adding a recipe will also add an empty 14th page in the recipe book. 52 recipes = 13+1 pages.
-Massive recipe spoilers!

I think that about covers it.

There is an easier way if you are working in a mod; put a leaf or song plant in your game, and make it give whatever you like using a node. Red bulbs, Loaf of Life, Volcano rolls, Rukh eggs...you can have it all. No crashes. But I think Yogoda told me you can't create new recipes. He's the software engineer, and he knows why...I would love to do that, personally, having a fertile mind. Drum Roll of Death, for instance, for those really pesky bosses...+4 defense, +5 energy shot. Of course, it would probably make the game too easy, so then you would need to make the bosses harder...

You can actually adjust what the items you consume do, so you can for example, make a plant leaf give you +5 energy shot if eaten.
You need the ingredients.txt file in the data folder, and behind an ingredient you have to add stuff like (++++energy) which makes it +5 energy same with health, it's +hp, and as far as I know you can put up to 5 '+' characters before an attribute. If you want more then one attribute on the same item, you have to seperate them within the ( )'s with a space.

The attributes I know of are these:
hp - increases hp
maxhp - fills hp
energy - increases energy shot damage
regen - regeneration
speed - increases speed
defense - increases defense
invincible - gives you a certain time of invincibility, up to 25 seconds I think(with 5 +'s)
petpower - increases your pet's damage
allstatus - this one needs a - in fromt of it, which makes it cure all statusses, or with a + give them all
poison - adds or removes poison depending on the + or -
blind - adds or removes blindness
trip - the trippy effect, more + characters increases the time I think
li - makes Li eat the item, though as far as I know you just see Li eating it and it has no other benefits, might be an increment to his damage, but I'm not sure.

What Wizarduss said has been posted before.

None the less, I should give this a shot.

Originally the only item that Li eats is some ice cream I think :P

And I know it's been posted before, I thought I'd just make it clear here, plus in the other thread was still some confusion on how it works excactly.

Yeah, the strawberry ice cream, if you drop it, Li will eat it, but no further side effects afaik.

EDIT: Or was it cherry ice cream? I don't recall having strawberries in the game. xD

But you recall cherries? ;) I think it is red berry ice cream.

Okay, red berry. It's been way too long since I played Aquaria properly.

Food Transmogrification

In this example we will transmogrify Fish Meat into Red Bulbs.
1. Discard all your Fish Meat, followed by all your Red Bulbs.
2. Resume game and collect them again. This ensures the Fish Meat is positioned directly before the Red Bulbs in your food list.
3. Place Fish Meat in a cooking slot. Place more Fish Meat in other cooking slots to transmogrify more than one at a time.
4. Discard all your remaining Fish Meat. The Red Bulbs should move up in the list to take its place.
5. Put away the Fish Meat in your cooking slots. *Boink* The Fish Meat magically becomes Red Bulbs.

Of course, you can just transmogrify the Fish Meat straight into a Volcano Roll or even a Loaf of Life if you prefer ;)

I don't like the cheating mentioned above, but using this is kinda funny.
I always have enough food, so I don't need it, but still a great find!

Does that mean if you "lose" the food you're cooking with, and then cancel it, you get more of whatever food took the place of the lost food? @.@

And I know this is a stupid question... but how do you drop food? I've never actually tried to do it, and I'm too... tired to open Aquaria right now and experiment. ^^;

You should just be able to drag the food off the menu screen if I recall correctly.
