Who Uses Framebuffer Effects?
« on: February 25, 2008, 05:56:17 am »
You know what?  I never realized I didn't have framebuffer effects on.  So I turned them on a couple minutes ago, played through most of the Veil and the Sun Temple and I realized...I don't like them one bit.  All those ripples and waves do is mar the beauty of Aquaria in a near-constant blur.  Does anybody else play with these effects on?  Does anybody like them?  Because I think not using them makes Aquaria way more beautiful.

I played the entire time through without them on and was totally on board with this game.  I actually had it checked off, but was updating my video card drivers for something else and found that Aquaria had a bunch of new features....   I'm playing through now with them on and getting used to them, but sometimes the ripples actually make me a bit queasy.  I think they are an amazing feature, the reflections on the Veil are great. one thing that confuses me a bit is switching forms while your in the air, you still see ripples. that makes no sense to me at all.  I totally understand how you would think it's distorting the aesthetic of the game, it's taken some getting used to but I'm starting to like them more and more, especially the ripple rings when you change forms ( underwater that is ;) )

Sawyer: You told her?

Barely played the game without, I think it DOES give nice effects, but it doesn't make the game more ugly, it only gives more effect to it. For all you know you could play as a Telekinetic person that can swim her way through air. =p

I just think it give the more watery feeling. Even though it CAN be very annoying at time.

The  only thing, like inkblob said, is that it's still used ABOVE the water, which is weird.

I didn't notice the reflections...where all do they occur?  Are they only in the Veil?

Wait what? I turned them on first thing and havn't looked back... Everything is so shiney and smooth and good looking, how could it look better without the 'underwater'-ness of everything waving?

I just don't like how BIG the waves are.  I don't know about you but I'm constantly dashing, spinning, changing forms, or doing something else and I feel like I'm just watching a constant ripple where before I would be admiring the landscape, that's all.  Especially when spinning.  You can't see a thing while spinning!  But for some reason it doesn't ripple when spinning with R...

It does actually, only not constant. Only when you just start spinning with the 'R' button.

I spin all the time with keyboard, it might be because it's just too nuts when you spin with the mouse w/framebuffer on.

I dunno...I never noticed anything wrong with it. When I'm spinning I'm normally watching the food I'm sucking in (I don't spin for fun) and I can see that just fine.

I like to randomly spin just for fun.  Sometimes I'll spin with R then start moving with the mouse and Naija will spin without ducking...it looks funny.

i don't see the framebuffer effects, although they are activated... How can that be? My Notebook is a Apple MacBook 2.2 GHz with 1GB RAM and Windows Vista/BootCamp. Does anyone know how to activate these effects? thx

Depends on your video card / drivers. On some cards/drivers the hardware accelerated framebuffer isn't supported.

Well, I'm getting used to them a bit more now, my comp does slow down in areas with alot of reflections.  But it's a momentary thing.  It's still hell to see while spinning, but I don't take as much notice of the dashing.  But I had a real knee-jerk negative reaction to it at first, it was just so ripply.
