General / Re: Infinite Ammo
« on: August 25, 2008, 09:03:28 pm »
This is pretty darn good news to me! It's somewhat sad that Derek isn't on board for Infinite Ammo, but I've been around the interwebs for quite some time and that guys got a million things going on at the same time all the time, so it's understandable. I can't wait to find out what thew new game is and what it's about, but nonetheless I'm sure it will be A-mazing. Also, being a  prairie province guy myself, it's pretty cool knowing your games are being made so close to home. (FLATLANDERS UNITE!)

Man I can't wait for that soundtrack to come out. I've wanted to listen to it while I work since the game came out.

The first and best place to start with Steam would be to get Aquaria up and running on Steam Works. Once you have that in place contact Steam Publishing, make them aware that Aquaria is up and running with Steam Works and give them some rough sales figures.  A few ideas to consider: Consider the best method that Steam could market Aquaria (ie. what market sector should be targeted, what games already on Steam have a similar target audience, how did those games perform) If you come to them with at least a little bit of your homework done they will consider Aquaria more seriously. Ask them about the certification process, and beta testing. One of the largest hindrances to getting an Indy developed game on a large platform (ie: Steam, XBLA, WiiWare) is the fact that Indy developers don't have a large cloud of testers at their finger tips. Meaning a large amount of beta testing and bug testing needs to be done during the certification stage, which in turn costs a lot of time and money on the publishers part. That's why you see very little Indy goodness on Steam, XBLA etc. the effort involved outweighs the potential profits. So if your looking at distributing via Steam, XBLA etc. do as much of your homework as possible. The less the publisher has to do to get your game on their platform the more willing they will be to accept your game. It's simple as that. Also, if you have any big name references you can give them (ie: the Destructoid guy mentioned above) don't be afraid to name drop. Anyways, that's my two cents, hit me up if you ahve any questions.

Support / Re: Graphical Aberations on widescreen monitor when fullscreen
« on: December 24, 2007, 06:58:58 am »
I had the same problems! I don't exactly know what cured the problem for me... but the only thing I can think of that could have done it was setting custom resolutions in init.cfg. I set the resolution of the game to match the screen ratio of my widescreen monitor (16:10). That worked fine, but I noticed something weird, setting widescreen resolutions had an odd effect on my framerate, even at 1280x800. So I tried setting the resolution back to one of the the defaults, which gave me a large boost in fps and for some reason the graphical oddities were no longer there.

So, what I'd suggest, after updating your vidcard drivers of course, would be to set a custom resolution in init.cfg. One that matches your screen ratio. Test it out, if it works fine that's great! If you find you're getting bad fps, switch back to one of the default resolutions and hopefully the graphical problems will be fixed! I really can't think of any way why this would make sense, but nonetheless I hope it helps!!

KeyseR,

Did you notice some gears just sitting there in the Sun Temple? Well... what do gears normally do? I'm pretty sure they don't just sit there....

General / Re: What Are Your Sales Expectations for this Game?
« on: December 21, 2007, 04:52:13 pm »
Glad you guys are doing well!! Very glad actually! I'm not even done Aquaria yet, but I can honestly say it's in my top ten favorite games of all time! I really can't wait to see what else you guys can do! Perhaps... a return to... dare I say.. Trigger Happy 2!! Muwahahaha. But seriously, I played that demo atleast 50 times. I wish I could still play it....

I really hope you guys can get Aquaria up on Steam and/or Xbox Live Arcade. That will not only bring you guys a heck of a lot more sales, but it'll bring you a lot of recognition as well. Regardless, I'm glad things are going well, keep up the good work, Aquaria is amazing. Enjoy that long nap ^-^

Edit: I just found the BES mirror. And yes, I'm downloading that demo, and yes, I'm going to play it for the next two hours.

Now that is strange!! Those are the types of things that can usually be fixed by simply updating the driver...  and it's usually in Vista where those problems crop up. Although, some drivers work better with different cards. What I'm saying is sometimes the most recent driver won't necessarily be the best driver for *your* card. So perhaps that is the case here?

It appears that Forceware 89.24 is the optimal driver for GeForce 4 series cards. So, Eriel, maybe try downgrading to that version? I'm shooting from the hip so to speak, but hopefully this helps.

Edit: I forgot to mention, the source I got that information from hasn't been updated in about a year and a half, so there more than likely is a better driver to be used with that card.

It was amazing for it's time! But it's pretty ancient compared to the current line-up of video cards. As reference, it's older than a Nvidia GeForce 5200.

Nvidia cards are only weird because they are the best ;)

Anyways, have you tried the basic stuff like trying to run at a lower resolution, turning off framebuffer effects etc. ? Also, make sure there is as little as possible running in the background while the game is running. If all else fails, it might be time to upgrade that vid card :P
