You need to beat the boss in the Temple of Light. By the way, using nature form will let you get past the spikes more easily on the way into the boss's lair.

how do I get to the roof of the sun temple?

Through that part in that overview map i marked as "optional" - the waterbubble at the top leads to the roof.  There's something up there but not required to complete the game.
