Divers call mantis shrimp "thumb splitters." The impact from a blow from the claws and head is only slightly less than the impact of a .22 caliber bullet.

Mantis shrimp can grow up to about ten inches in length and are fast moving. They eat crabs, anemones, and fish, among other things, and if kept in an aquarium with other fish, they will eventually eat them all. They dig burrows and live in crevices in reefs and rocks.

There are two types of Mantis Shrimp; One armed with a hammerlike club while the other, armed with a sharp spear. The Mantis Shrimp in the photo is the later.

Yes some of the larger shrimps can certainly do some damage chibi, cute does not always equate harmless, koala bears are cute but they can give a nasty bite and they are very grumpy animals. Also the giant panda can kill and stay miles away from the polar bear :o

It was a joke ... I am well aware of the danger of anthropomorphizing animals.  :P  ;)

That is awesome - though it could be the key to eternal youth, I wouldn't want to repeat my infancy every thirty years or so ...

True. I don't think it could/should be used to create eternal youth for humans (which is ultimately a terrible idea), but it's still cool for science!

I wouldn't mind being 21 again but you can keep whole the idea of going through adolesece again! :o No way I want to be a teen again, even though the 60's and 70's were great being 13 or 19 wasn't :p

Yeah! Rampant overpopulation, overflowing prisons as people kill one another for space or inheritance (can't just wait for you rich grandmother to die now), complete disruption of the economy, dissolution of the generational balance that keeps things like employment, health insurance, and real estate stable.....
Throw in the ethical and philosophical questions that would inevitably have to come with it (do we give eternal life only to the rich? should we bring dying people back by giving them magical youth potion? do bad people get to live forever too? does life even have a purpose if you get to keep re-doing it?), and you've got yourself a great time living forever on a really shitty planet!

Not forgetting the simple bordom of living so long that life eventually becomes just too much to bear and suicide will become an everyday occurance....

Given eternity, these problems fade away as incremental solutions erode them to nothing over long periods of time.

I don't think this would occur. But given very long life, I suppose anything is possible. If it did come to pass, I don't see how it's tragic - isn't a suicide in your scenario the sign of the fullest possible life?

Chasm City (by Alastair Reynolds), one of the best SF books around, predicts that immortals won't openly commit suicide; rather, they'll have increasingly dangerous hobbies.  :)

Most would Chibi but a lot would find a way to end things.

But back to that jelly (and I don't for one minute believe that they could find the secret of eternal life for us from it, it's too different) they might find a way to regenerate body parts but even that is a very remote possibility.
