Help I'm covered with bugs!?

Oh the horror! I was riding a seahorse around in the dark near the coelacanth-like creatures (Open Waters). Now that I've disembarked it appears that bugs have crawled all over me! I can't swim anywhere. How do I get them off? Are they going to slowly kill me?

Also turning into a fish makes them.... die i suppose, they seem to disappear.
