I'm sorry if this has been posted before. Maybe theres an easier solution to this but I couldn't find one.
First off, this game is great.
I've been using a wired Xbox360 to play the game and it was working just fine and dandy until I got to the point where you get the energy form and can start shooting. You see, for some reason it would always fire behind me and no matter what I tried. I spent a good hour or so fiddling with the controls and came to the conclusion that it has something to do with the cursor not completely locking when the game detects gamepad input and orienting itself pointing backwards. You can see this when you use the keyboard for navigation.
After completely exhausting all the other options and really not wanting to use Mouse controls, I decided to try and implement Robotron style controls with Xpadder. A pretty awesome piece of software that has really helped when games wont recognize certain input like triggers/d-pad etc..
1. You need a Xbox 360 wired controller.
2. Download Xpadder and add all your buttons as well as enable the two analog sticks. I also made the two triggers into keys which are normally not recognized and configured them within Aquaria to be left and right food.
3. Now you can do this next part manually or download my xpadder game profile for Aquaria. The manual way to do it is to select 8 way controls for your right analog stick. Then program each of those directions to a single key, K for example. Enable turbo for each of those directions. Next adjust the deadzone for your right analog so it isn't firing automatically.
4. Start Aquaria and go into the options and set STICK 1 as 0 and 1, then set STICK 2 as 4 and 3. Make your sing/ability key the same as what you programmed your right analog to be, K for example. You have to make it your "sing/ability" key it doesn't work with "right mouse equiv". Make the "right mouse equiv" key something convenient like the X button on the pad since that is what you'll be using for songs as well as charged shots. Configure the rest of the controls as you please, you can also add the left/right food to the triggers as they will now be recognized as keys. Just don't use the keyboard for movement as that unlocks the cursor.
You can now fire in an direction just by pointing the right stick in that direction. This not just 8 way firing but true analog precision. I've only just barely made it out into open waters and entered the Kelp Forest with this config so I don't know how it will fare later on, but right now I can target just bout anything and kill it with ease.
