Where is the Linux version?
« on: May 12, 2010, 04:29:30 pm »
Hi,

Since the beta expired, I have been returning every now and then to see if the Linux version is available for purchase, only to find it is not. When can we expect to see it up there?

Actually, the question is a bit outdated by now, since I have bought it via the Humbe Indie Bundle, which means two things:
- the game is apparently done, so why isn't it on the Bit Blot page?
- it's quite a few bucks minus for you guys :)

If you lost your Humble, you can mail them and get it back.
If you missed it, your point is valid. :)

Someone might as well release the binaries from the Linux version publicly. Not as if there's any point hiding it, as the source code's already out there.

Source code != full game. Art and sound and so on are all missing.

I did say "binaries", didn't I. That's precisely what I mean.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but are you suggesting that because the source code is free, someone should release all the content for free too?  ???

Read: binaries. Maybe I'm not being clear enough. I'm referring to the binaries that are extracted from the installer, not the installer itself (which can, arguably, be called a binary).

(And if I need to be clearer, I'll define the word "binary." Binary refers to compiled, executable code that can be run by the operating system, it is very difficult for humans to read. That said, the Lua scripts are not binaries, though they are open source anyways.)

I'm still not sure what isn't included in the binaries though. If you're not talking about the source code, I don't see what you're getting at OR what you want.
God sees and knows everything, but at least he won't gossip about it.

I think his point is to release the linux source for people who have the windows version, so they could copy the content to the linux binaries.

I don't know why it's so difficult to understand. WiZaRDuSS seemed to have gotten the idea. You know how the Windows version has EXEs and DLLs? Those are binaries. If you apply the concept to Linux, that means the ELF executable "aquaria", and any accompanying software libraries (.so files). That means no data folder will need to be included. Just the executables and libraries. I would make an archive myself, but I'd need consent.
