Aquaria: Linux - Open Beta!
« on: December 14, 2009, 05:52:32 pm »
A new port of Aquaria has been completed by the prolific Linux codemaster Ryan C. Gordon. :)

You can download it here and play it until January 13th: http://icculus.org/aquaria/aquaria-beta-installer.run

The installer has beta test details (bug tracker, discussion list) in its README.

Thanks in advance for your help and a huuuge thank you to Ryan!  8)

Tried to run it earlier but it just segfaults after showing the loading bar at startup. Still, great news. I'm sure Ryan will have a fix soon.

Free...? What.
God sees and knows everything, but at least he won't gossip about it.

My understanding is that it will be free to test until January 13th, sort of like a time-limited trial, after which point it will cease working?

Hi!

I was living in the hope of seeing this before Christmas :)  ;D Hurray!

I'll try to provide as much feedback as possible.

Thanks Nava, Alec and Ryan.

Best regards. ;)

So modest...  ;)

[EDIT]: Good point, Alpha. Alec's gone through a rough patch or two. A kind soul nearby does wonders for the morale. ^-^

[EDIT2]: ... however, this thread's about Linux, not happiness (though I know some that confuse the two).  :)

will it be possible to support resolutions smaller than 800x600?
works fine on my netbook in winxp, but would be more awesome if the linux version did so too

I run Gentoo Linux as my primary OS and this is my experience so far:

* GREAT installer: simple, fast, and gets the job done.

* Game launches without linking errors... always love that.

* At launch I was not asked for any information, the game just defaulted to full screen, native resolution. This should have been fine-- if I didn't run NVidia TwinView... Sadly for now I am running it in a window at the only other resolution available to me: 800x600 (this could be because of my X cfg file... haven't really looked at the resolutions I've added to my card in there... haha)

* Mods Page: all the images are white... it's a beta. lol

* Game Play: I soon noticed that I can't alt+tab out of the game to continue writing this review... should add that.

* Game Play: Fast. Smooth. Beautiful. All graphical features from original game work flawlessly. (shader effects, fades, cut scenes, animations, etc)

* Game Play: All particle systems work perfectly, and it looks like all NPCs also execute their scripts correctly.

* Game Play: Audio is great, noticed a console warning about an extension not being supported so it'll "use more RAM."

* Game: Uses a pretty consistent 30% of my 2gb of ram, from launch into game play (~615mb). IOW: Game should play perfectly on a 768mb system.

* Saving/Loading: Copied my saves from Windows, they load great-- screen shots (though, it seems to center them differently?) and all! :D

* There was one more thing... that I can't remember...

Overall, GREAT JOB! Literally, the first native Linux game I've installed that didn't do something retarded, like... not even run.

P.S. I'm sure the resolution and the mods bugs are known, so I won't bother reporting them... though, when the final version is released I'll definitely voice any final changes needed to the bugzilla linked in the included text file.
There is, really, nothing new under the sun. We're all star dust, baby! :D
