Which version? Steam or OSX?
« on: April 07, 2009, 06:42:54 pm »
So, I've been playing the demo of this. Playing EV: Nova for the first time in a few years caused me to take a trip to Ambrosia's Website for patches and I noticed this interesting looking game.

Played an hour or two, it seems pretty stylish.

Now, what I'm curious about which version I should consider getting...

The PC Version and OSX Version are USD$30 (Which I must admit is a lot at the moment, go exchange rates), while the Steam version is $20

I use steam a lot already, so I assume it just uses Valve's online authentication to make sure I own the game - but if I say buy a PC/Mac retail version play the game, burn it off to a CD or something and then decide to pick it up again in a few years or something, is the registration again just plug and play? Do I need to go through some hoops again to re-register? Are there any features (besides Steam Achievements) that differ between the Steam and Mac Retail versions?

I mean, I'd prefer to have it on Mac OS but I'm not sure it's worth 50% more cost and registration codes that may or may not self destruct if I decide to archive it.

Thanks to anyone who gives me the drum on what the situation is. :)

If you would prefer the OSX version, then I would recommend the OSX version.
It's definitely worth the $30 (plus the devs will get more money than they would if you bought it from Steam), and as long as you don't lose the CD key you have nothing to worry about.

FYI, we make the most money from your purchase if you buy the Windows version from our site. :)

I would have bought it from your site if only you'd sell a Mac version! I don't even have Windows.

I think the game is worth $30  the real question is: why did steam lower it? I think its to early.

For comparison; Spiderweb Software sells most of its new games for $28 nowadays.

What cut does Ambrosia take from OSX Aquaria purchases? If you'd have to kill me to tell me, then what's the hierarchy?  ;)

Valve didn't want to release it at $30, they didn't think it'd sell very well at that price. It kind of makes sense when you consider their pricing range.

We can't discuss the details of our contracts. :)

Okay, I ended up buying the game on steam. $30 AUD was a bit more reasonable than ~$50 AUD.
