Launch game straight to main menu.
« on: March 07, 2009, 03:39:45 pm »
Is there a way to remove the little opening sequence when launching the game?

I'm using the Mac version.

When I launch the game, I first get a little movie on the Ambrosia Logo, then a couple of seconds on the BitBlot logo, then a nice little scene with windmils and a dragon. And only then the game menu appears, ...but then it takes a couple of seconds before the menu buttons change their Aquarian to English.

This is nice the first time around, but it gets annoying if I just want to get back to the game. It would be really nice if I can just double click on the game icon and the main menu would appear right away without much more ado.

As far as I know you are the first person to object to that short opening sequence?  :o

I don't particularly care for opening logos either.  They're fine the first time you start the game, but after that they should be skippable.  I know who created the game, I don't need to be bashed over the head with it every time I play.  However Aquaria is hardly unique in this respect, every game has them these days and some are painfully longer and unskippable.

For what it's worth, once you get to the menu you don't have to wait for the text on the menu options to translate before you can use them.  You can click them right away provided you remember the position of what you want to select, which shouldn't be too hard because 99.9% of the time you'll be going for the same option: Load Game.

I really don't mind the opening sequence - it's not very long, and all the other cutscenes can be skipped. Also, Aquaria should be enjoyed in sittings of more than twenty minutes. If the introduction significantly impinges on your playing time (in a percent), you should set aside more time.

In some games you can just hit escape if you want to skip to the start but that seems to be happening less and less now, but I find Aquarias start quite fast compared to many.

Holding escape doesn't skip them, but it does make them shorter.  On the mac version, if you want to make this the default behavior, you can edit the file at YOURHOMEFOLDER/Library/Preferences/com.bit-blot.aquaria.xml and change <ShortLogos on="0" /> to  <ShortLogos on="1" />.

Yeah, it's the same like that in the usersettings.xml file in windows, which lays in the Aquaria directory.

I just tried it out, by doing what PiSketch says, the logo will pop up on a white screen, then face and you go to the main menu, it's not THAT much faster, but it's certainly shorter.

The value to change is near the bottom of the file, in the list 'demo'.

Yes! Thank you, that did the trick!
But now I feel a bit sheepish for not bothering to check the preference files myself... oh well.   :)

I don't mind logo movies in games, in fact, I want to see them! ( at least the first time) Its like  those studio and production company logos that appear at the start of the movie,  they have grown to become a part of the whole movie watching experience, and mentally prepare you for getting into the movie. If you bought a ticked to a movie, you'd actually feel  cheated if they don't appear. (At least, that is how I feel about it)

I don't mind it much myself. They're Independent, they made a great product, they can have a few moments of my attention span every time I start. There's also the fact that unlike several other games I've played in the last few years there's less than five of them to sit through.  >:(

Yeah, I believe Steams 'UT3: Black' has about... 7? Thank god you can skip those.

Also, this topic was about a month old, I don't mind it too much, just don't start necroing year old threads without actual reasons or serious questions. ^^

True, but still, necroing year old topics without reason is going a bit far. =p
It was only a warning anyway.

It was a month. On a slow forum. And on the front page. :o

I intentionally didn't comment on any of the more insightful topics posted in the distant past when I joined, so the fact that even one month posts are untouchable is a bit of a head-desker here. Have fun gang.

Listen to what I say, I'm only saying that you shouldn't necro year old topics, and seeing you necro'd a month old topic, which is fine, I wondered if you looked at the dates at all, thus just a simple warning without consequences, geesh.

And excuse me, I didn't know this topic was on the front page.
