My musical knowledge and hearing are far from perfect, but as far as I can tell, the green verse note (on the south corner) plays a C (Do). Continuing counter clockwise, we have D, E and so, concluding with a higher octave C. Logically, the orange note (west) should play a B (Si), but I could swear it actually plays a B flat.

Oddly, if I load one of my earlier saves (one that was saved in the demo version), it seems to play a B as expected.

Any explanation for this? Will it change in future versions? Otherwise I'll be forced to uninstall the game and just play the demo - who needs to go past the energy temple when you can sing a full octave?  ;)

I would say a few words about how wonderful the game is, but mere words will never be able to fully express my awe.

You could try only playing the demo... Or you could load up the
Quote
C:\Program Files\Aquaria\sfx\cache
folder and check out the note#.ogg files (the # are numbers from 0 to 7). Notice that number 6 has a 6b also, which might be the flat version (or the non flat one, I dunno).
Have a poke around, maybe you can change it simply by renaming one of those notes as the other. xD

Thanks! Renaming them does solve the "problem" (6 was originally flat). Some more research revealed that what I call "B flat" is denoted simply "B" in some places (e.g. Germany), but I'm still not sure why that's relevant (again noting that my knowledge is limited).

I just recognised them as the doh ray me range of notes that I learnt in school, and of course some sound cards perhaps don't quite get the sounds right perhaps?

No, that's not the problem. It's about the choice of musical scale, and for some reason a much less common scale (AFAIK) is currently the default.

Guys, guys.  You're both right.

Do Re Mi and so on is called solfege.  An eight note major scale goes thusly:

Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do

over the whole octave.  However, Holy-Fire is quite right in noting (hah, noting) that the 7th term is flatted, becoming in this case Te, or Ta (either/or).  This means that in the game, when you swirl around the Verse Circle, that part of it goes:

... La Te Do

which is a little weird to hear for the musically inclined, who are expecting the typical Ti.  Tipical Ti?  Whatever.  This always threw me off, every time I heard it playing, because I have a problem with unresolved leading tones.  At least they didn't mess around with the high octave note or do some crazy pentatonic stuff.  Although it would be interesting to see if any of the mods offer the singing ability in more than one form, modifying the Verse Scale to match the mood; something like a diminished scale for Spirit Form, augmented scale for Energy Form, a-like a-that.  For the Super Zelda Song-Match Challenge, give an entire chromatic scale, map the notes to a couple rows on the keyboard, and do a Simon Says Hardcore!

The game alternates between Bb and B natural depending on the level (because some of the music tracks are in C, some in D minor / F major)

I guess that kind of makes sense, thanks. Personally I feel it's more important for the verse notes to have a consistent tone than to match the music. I'll try copying the B over the Bb and see how I like it.

Lol. I actually noticed this kind of thing when I added a different melodious piece of music to a mod once. Even though the song sounded like it'd fit the game, it really didn't. I guess it was because it was a different key. xD
I say melodious 'cos you don't notice that sort of thing when adding some hardcore music to the game. lol
