Don't buy the CD for this game
« on: January 13, 2009, 11:16:46 pm »
I always feel a bit nervous getting direct-download software since it means that I run the risk of losing my product in the event of a hard drive failure or accidental deletion. I could make CD backups but I've heard that burned CDRs degrade faster than regular pressed CDs. With this in mind, I decided to pay extra for the CD version of Aquaria when I bought the game.

I wasn't expecting too much, just a nicely printed CD with some of the standard Aquaria artwork we've seen on this site, possibly in a jewel case. Instead, I got a cardboard envelope containing this:

I've obscured the serial number printed near the top of the disc and my address printed near the bottom.

On the back of the disc was the telltale blue colour of a common consumer CDR, the kind I could buy for $0.50 in any computer or electronics store.

In short, don't bother ordering the CD version of this game, it's a complete waste of money.

It wasn't such a waste of money before Alec disabled the game's DRM (because there was no other quick way to have a hard copy); but now that Aquaria can be burned to a disc, it is rather pointless. I'm waiting earnestly for the official CD and original soundtrack.  :)

can't say I like how Plimus' logo is 10x bigger than the title of the game. that should easily be the most prominent indicator as to what the disk is, one would think that the game is called Plimus  :P
Ellie: Are they from the future too?
Sawyer: You told her?

Yes - it's a purchase option. I think there's a five dollar premium.

Always thought it was waste. I am waiting for the OST and a hard copy if one comes out.

The reason this is offered is for people who don't have fast enough internet to download stuff at a reasonable rate. Its a service provided automatically by Plimus, so the CD is just a generic thing.

If there's some way we can make this more obvious so that people don't order thinking its a nicely presented item, let us know. Its not intended to be!

Ah, okay. That definitely makes more sense. Also, one way you could emphasize the fact that it's a very cheap CD would be to include a picture next to the option.

I don't think they make any extra profit from the CD, I think that's all for Plimus.

Very good, Nava. Careless mistake on my part.  ;)

Browsing this forum would've helped, JSW. We have pictures and explanations about the CD and that it is only an offering from Plimus and has (nearly) nothing to do with Bit Blot, floating around here. :)

I am really happy that the DRM has been removed, because now administrator rights are not required for an install. Which means, while I'm on an underway on the ship (for those of you that do not know, I am in the US Navy, still currently stationed on a ship), I will be able to play the game out at sea and work on modding; given the time to do so. Might even be able to get some people interested in purchasing the game. :)

And who else would rather play Aquaria than creatures of the sea?  ;)
