That is so cool. The elbow squid has just won the Weird Underwater Creatures Thread.

Squids should not have elbows. :'(

(It's ok Derek: evolution happens)  ;D Just view it as another monstrosity spawned by the Creator.

They found this thing at an oil drilling site, maybe there was something with the oil that had an effect on the squids growth or evolution. It seems to use its elephant ear shaped crown as a mode of propulsion, and the elbows seem to be made by an asterisk-shaped formation of bones, very cool indeed. To wonderland!

For the people who didnt get that: Wonderland is another name for area 51, im just a fountain of knowledge, arent i?

I found it fascinating and strange but I can see how it could evolve quite naturally. There is a niche for creatures that can 'fish' in the deep dark of the ocean and if it can't see so well down there then letting it's arms droop to catch food is only the next step from chasing it. The elbows would just happen...
Of course none of this detracts from the fact that it is an amazing sight to see, just like Hammer Head sharks and Narwales :D

Yes, NarWales' climate is very agreeable this time of year.  ;D

Unfortunately Derek, nature has no sense of aesthetic whatsoever.  :(  Beauty happens when natural function coincides with human ideals.

Here's a link to the best article on the subject (Popular Science). The examples are decidedly unsettling, to put ti mildly.
