Good Co-op Games!
« on: August 28, 2008, 11:28:26 pm »
Geez, good co-op games are hard to come by.  So are good friends to play them with - all my friends who I used to play video games with don't live in my city! :o

But a couple of great co-op games came out on XBLA, recently, so I thought I'd start a thread!

Bionic Commando: Rearmed (for XBLA)!  The team that remade this did a great job of it - improving the game in every way while TOTALLY retaining the classic feel of it.  They also added CO-OP!  And it's a blast.  It's really funny when someone ends up mis-swinging and falling into the water, or a pit of spikes (or blows himself and/or his friend up with a bazooka!).  My friend and I got quite far in this together, but unfortunately, I had to leave town before we could finish. :'(

Castle Crashers just came out this week on XBLA, too!  I've only played a demo at Comic-Con, but it was great.  I've heard nothing but positive reviews of the final game, too.

And here are some of my other favorite co-op games from the past and present:

Oh man, you totally have to play Treasure Treasure with someone.  A really cute, cooperative puzzle/platform game for the PC.  Free!

TMNT: The Arcade Game.  'NUFF SAID! ;D

One of my favorite games of all time, one of the first co-op games, and, in my opinion, the BEST co-op game!  As a kid, I used to go down to "GameZone," the local game store (RPGs and board games, mostly), to play this in their computer area with my buds (and whoever else was around).  SO much fun.

I'm sure there are plenty more I'm forgetting, too.  But now it's your turn!

Bubble Bobble

K, you didn't really interact with the other player that much..... but playing this with my brother on the Amiga 500 was effin' good times.

I will totally second Alec's entry.  Though I loved many of yours too, Derek, and am desperately hoping Castle Crashers hits PSN at some point (I was one of the stupid people that got a core 360 because I was very poor and I had to play Dead Rising -- got a PS3 quite a while later).  I saw some video of it recently and it looks so damned good.

I'll also mention Secret of Mana, which my wife and I played through not so long ago.  That was one of the best SNES coop games, along with Seiken Densetsu 3.  I hear Children of Mana on DS is supposed to actually be pretty darn good when played with friends, even though reviews weren't too kind to it (and I don't know why... I've been playing it a bit and it seems like a fine game).  I'm going to buy her a copy soon so we can give it a go.

Oh oh, and fucking Contra 4.  Friend of mine came to visit from across the country a bit ago and we had such an awesome time with that.  A great game all around to be sure, but super satisfying with a friend.

Lego StarWars and to a greater effect, Lego Indiana Jones are real fun co-op games :) the game difficulty isn't that bad but it's a hoot to boot through with someone.
Ellie: Are they from the future too?
Sawyer: You told her?

Ah, yeah... pretty much ALL the Contra games are amazing co-op games.  My favorite is Contra III, though! ;)

// EDIT: Damnit.

Also, how could I forget:

What's that second image, Derek?  I get concerned when I see something old-school I can't identify.

I couldn't identify that one either. I know I've never played it.

There are many single player games that I enjoyed playing with my brother on many different systems, but as far as co-op games where we weren't against each other I would have to say that my favorite didn't come around until the SNES was out. My favorite being Secret of Mana. It was my first experience with an action-rpg that was multiplayer up to 3 players. Secret of Evermore was pretty darn good too. We use to play super bomber-man as a co-op as well; even though it would result in us fighting each other at the end of each round. Back in the old days when I was a kid there just wasn't really that many good quality co-op multiplayer games out. Doom2 definitely filled my interest in the aspect for many years. I would have to say it's tied right up there with my favorites as well, even though there isn't much strategy to it.

It's Gunstar Heroes!

If you get a chance to play it (especially co-op), do it.  Otherwise, it's pretty fun to watch other people play it, too:

I'm never embedding an image again for as long as I live... :'(

I've been playing Castle Crashers nonstop since I bought it last friday.  It's so damned addicting and fun.  We should play some time once the online issues are fixed.  I'm not touching the multiplayer option until I know I'm not gonna lose my save data.

As for great co-op games, I will second Seiken Densetsu 3.   One of my favorite games ever and I'm helping my roommate do a speed run of it for Speed Demoes Archive.

One that I didn't see here was Guerilla War for the NES.  It was a top-down shooter that was hella fun to play and hard as shit.  I used to play it all the time with my friends at summer camp.  Mind you, I was like 7.

This...game...ROCKS!

My favorite co-op game is a little embarrassing, it's not my favorite because of the game itself, but for the experience I had with my sister: It was a fighting game between cute little furry animals on Neopets.com
