Aquaria on STEAM!!
« on: August 28, 2008, 02:12:39 pm »
UPDATED:

At least!! Aquaria si available on STEAM.... and with achievements.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/24420/

===========================================================================================

HI everybody!!

I'm new here, and first of all I wanna congratulate all the people at Bit Blot for the amazing piece of art AQUARIA. Thanks for your all great job.

But I have a big concern about the distribution of the game.... I would like the game would be available on STEAM.

I know it has been asked before, I know... and I know developers have already considered this option, but I need to ask about it again... why? Because I think STEAM can improve the user experience a lot. Let me explain:

- Easy to buy the game. Different payment methods and secure, and 15 million people have already an STEAM account.
- STEAM can help to spread the game. Lot of people still don't know about Aquaria!!
- With STEAMworks tools (free tools by the way) Aquaria could have: STEAM community integration (chat in-game), auto-updating (no more downloading patches), stats (hours played), ACHIEVEMENTS (everybody loves achievements!!) and useful developers tools (instant sales-data, tracking gameplay).
- And best of all..... with next STEAMcloud option, you could save your savegames on the net automatically, to continue playing wherever you want.

And that's the most exciting of STEAM..... that you can easily access to all your games with your account wherever yo want. So.... PLEASE... try everything you could to bring AQUARIA to STEAM... PLEASE.

Thank you for reading and sorry for talking about a such a repeated topic.

Have fun.

OH! a last different question.... what about a spanish translation of the game?

There's really no need to "suggest" this again.  Because if you did indeed know that it's been discussed before then you should know that Bit-Blot applied for Aquaria to be on STEAM but the bozos that run the service refuse to get back to them about it.

We all know the benefits of Steam distribution.

This...game...ROCKS!

I'm going to try again, with some help from Chris. I found some new contacts there, so I think we might have a shot.

There's no reason why the game shouldn't be on Steam. I think we just need to demonstrate how much of a great fit it would be to them in a really clear way.  ^-^

And show that you have the determination to keep pesering them... I hate to say it but some of these people do deliberately ignore a first or even second such advance because they are testing your strengths, so try and try again Alec, and if they still ignore you after the third go then you might consider giving up....... But don't allow them to dictate to you, EVER!
That's the trouble they can also start to think that you are desperate and then they start telling you what you must do to stay with them and that is fatal.....

Keep in mind that VALVe is a small company. It only has 160 people working... so imagine that only a small piece of them are working on getting content for STEAM and talking with many developers at same time.

If you do go the Steam route, see if you can manage to get the game on there without requiring that Steam be loaded to run it.  I know a number of people who would likely enjoy grabbing the game via the service, but hate being tied to it because of technical issues (several people I know at this point just can't get any games to run right when they need to be updated, and another guy is on dialup due to where he lives, which Steam doesn't like at all).  It seems a lot of games go through Steam to run and update and such, but I know there are some that give you more options.  The only one that springs to mind is DEFCON (I don't buy much on Steam if I can help it), but I know there are some others.

I'm don't mind using Steam. I've bought a few games on there. (Orange Box, Everyday Shooter, AudioSurf) But I also have a good internet connection, so its not really a big deal.

If this game had gone to steam only support, I would not have beeen continuing support for it, nor will my mod be continued. Don't get me wrong, there's some awesome features about steam that I really like. But there's a big problem with it. One being those that don't continue to have their own ISP. 6 months out of the year I'm on government computers, like now, using government satellite communications for internet access, which if you could imagine splitting up between 3000 marines for 3/4's of the time, the bandwidth gets quite slow. And future updates would not be possible. The only way I get stuff is by snail mail, from family and friends. It would be a sad fate if Aquaria went Steam only support. But on the other hand if you were able to keep the game domestic-so-to-speak, at the same time, then there wouldn't be a problem... that is if valve didn't try to get the rights to only be able to sell the product through them instead of the current method. I had Steam for a long time, even way back with half-life and all of it's expansions, then again with Half-life 2 but I had to talk to valve support because I was using a new computer since my old computer had died, and lost all my login information for my steam account. And my old email address for the account was no longer valid. But I got that resolved... unfortunately that laptop has since died with a critical hard drive error; cyclic redundancy error. :/ and now I'm using a new, yet older laptop. But it runs Aquaria beautifully. :) Once again lost my account for steam due to a loss of a hard drive. And once again my email is probably invalid... the joys of ever changing email service providers due to being in the military.

Did anyone say it'd be Steam-only? Ever?

Fake drama is silly.

I understand that a few people have had problems with the service, and other people have some kind of personal vendetta against it, but millions of people use it successfully and enjoy it. I'm one of them! :)

I kind of find it insulting that you said it was fake drama, but my experience with dealing with steam and not constantly having an internet connection is a big turn off for the idea. And many companies try to make their services exclusive only to such services.. and usually not by the developers choice but by companies with such services.

No one ever did say it would be Steam only, but no one ever stated that it wouldn't be either. I know others here share my point of view as well. Thus verifying my validity in saying that it's not fake drama.

But putting my pride aside, I wasn't trying to imply that I wouldn't continue modding support because of not liking steam, but for the fake that I wouldn't be able to continue support. However, from what you said, I can see that you wouldn't let it be the only means of distribution for PC and therefore I wouldn't have to worry about that now would I. :)

So, you cheered me up in way by saying that as well.

I found your attitude confusing. Like "I'm only going to say this once" as if you're threatening people? It really sounded like you were getting worked up over nothing, and that's why I said "fake drama". There is no issue with putting Aquaria on Steam.

It is another platform we can release the game on, which is an awesome platform. There would be no reason to make the game exclusive to Steam at this point, since its already out on our site. (not that we would have anyways)

So chill, homies.

There, edited comment to be less confusing and perhaps a bit less "threating" with "fake drama". : P

Damn, man. I spent a whole lot of time at the Left 4 Dead booth at PAX, I shoulda brought it up with one of the Valve guys there. Silly me. Any progress? Or is there anything we can do, email, sign a petition, create fan sites, etc etc etc? I'll drive over there and hunger strike. Was gonna do it anyway to make them let me in to play L4D again, I can add this to my list of demands.
