Thinking of buying... Linux!
« on: July 30, 2008, 03:20:22 am »
Hey all.

I just played the demo in Linux (with wine) and I want to buy this game. But first, I have some questions.
1- Does it have copy-protection? Because if I buy the game and then I can only install it in one computer and then ask for permission to install it again (say, in windows) if it doesn't work, then I don't want to buy the game. Also, I live in two places, so I would like to install it in both.

2- I understand there is a native linux port in the works. Once the linux native comes out... will I need to pay again for it? (If I buy the windows one)

Thanks!

I'm almost certain there's no copy-protection b/c #1, people have pirated the game (NOT RECOMMENDING IT JUST AN EXAMPLE FOR ARGUEMENT'S SAKE), and #2 I've already installed it on 3 of my computers.

As for buying it a second time, I don't know.  Alec could answer you better.

This...game...ROCKS!

I don't think the Linux port is anywhere close. There are other more important projects Alec is (and will) spending time on.
(Note: I have no problem with Linux, I'm using it myself.)

I'd say just buy it now, and if a Linux version eventually gets done we'll figure out how to price it so that people find it fair. :)

Okay, I'm convinced. I just bought it.

I sure hope it works in wine :)

BTW, unfortunately, pirates ALWAYS manage, whether the game has copy-protection or not. I don't understand why companies even bother. Copy protection affects only regular customers... pirates don't have to deal with it and us paying-customers always have problems with it.

See ya.

Hmm... you need a phone to buy? I don't have a phone. I hate phones. I use my office number in my credit card...

(never mind... I'm downloading now!)

Still waiting for the Linux version here.  I think it's a real shame Alec had (or at least from the video seemed to have had) Aquaria mostly running on Linux after a weekend of effort - then just chucked it in favor of Mac.  Of course, in all fairness, he may have had Mac to the same point as well - tho this was (if memory serves) before even the win version was in full release.

Oh and actually...waiting on linux to buy two copies...not much per se, but if I'm willing to shell out for linux, I'm sure there's more.  Like Heston said in Planet of the Apes - "Where there's one...there's another..and another..and...."

I for one, have held off on buying this game thus far because I'm waiting for the Linux version to either be released or officially cancelled. I'm hoping that it won't be long after the Mac version comes out (since once you've got code running on two different platforms it's relatively easy to port it to a third.)

I know I could run it in Wine but I'd still prefer a native version if it's at all possible.

I use Debian GNU/Linux and will probably buy the game once it's released natively on Linux.. and I buy a new video card. Tried the demo on XP with a GeForce 6200 (PCI) and it wasn't playable even at lowest res and everything.
I may just give in in a few weeks and get it for myself and a friend for her birthday even if it only runs in Wine.

I'm playing it with a geforce 6200 and it runs beautifully. It's probably your CPU, if I had to guess.

So now that the Mac version is out an the 1.1 patch for the Windows version is finished, is there any update on whether or not there will be a Linux port made?

Probably not.

I have a ton of projects to do in the immediate future, so I don't think there will be justifiable time to do it.

'Salright. I was mostly just waiting until you made a definite statement one way or the other before I made my purchase, since I wanted my $30 (well, $20 now) to go in the "Linux" column rather than the "Windows" one if I had the choice. Since it runs pretty much flawlessly in Wine having an actual Linux binary isn't such a big deal.

Or, at least the 1.0 version was reported to run well in Wine. Has anyone tried the new 1.1.1 release?
