The World Ends With You
« on: April 29, 2008, 11:55:46 am »
Ok considering the rave reviews this game has received I'm curious as to what anyone else who has played it's thoughts are. I know Square Enix generally get a lot of hype with their releases any way and I realise there are arguments both for and against the company (Personally I'm a fan, with caveats).

This new game though is something else, sure it has square staples such as an angsty, intitially unlikeable teenage hero, with improbably spiky hair, but as the game rolls on it brings a lot of new things to the table, most notably great use of the DS touch screen for a combat system that is a challenge to get used to, but a pleasure to master.

Im not going to regurgitate what the major mags have had to say, go read a review if you haven't already played the game. If you have, lets discuss it.

Edit: Given the view to comment ratio I'm starting to think the game is earning its "cult" reputation. (I.e its liked a lot by a few)

I was kind of interested in this, mainly because of the title. I might try it out at some point!

Well I too was interested in it only because it was made by the same people as Kingdom Hearts and it looks to follow in suit in both sight and substance.  Add to that the rave reviews and I'm pretty sure I'll get it in a few days.

This...game...ROCKS!

I'm really interested in it (I've read about it on DeviantArt), but I'm not sure whether I'll get it. I'll try to, though. It sounds really interesting.

Lol! I guess it hasn't been out that long and I'm just being impatient. If you do get it be warned the combat system takes some getting used to as you use both screens at the same time. You need to spend a couple of good hours getting your head around it. On the plus side you can set the top screen to auto so that you can concentrate on the main character and there are a bunch of other tweaks you can do as well so no matter what your skill level you can juggle things to suit.

I got the game now and have played it some, and I'm liking it a lot.
But as Mandrake said the combat system will take a bit of time to get used to. But i rely like the fact that its in Tokyo you play and not in another fantasy world like most other games.

Its been a while and I haven't replied to my own thread, how remiss  ;). Ok after literally days playing the game it still hasn't gotten old, Ive just finished the end of chapter 2 with great deal of time off to level up my pins (I got whooped by the end boss a few times and decided I needed to toughen up). Back into the plot again for the final chapter. As a note, while reviewers say the plot can be finished in 12 hours (Ive spent maybe 18 so far) the amount of hours that can be squeezed out for a completest seems immense. With work and uni I dont have the time but Id imagine discovering every pin and leveling it would be the work of months.

I have now finished the game which was excellent from start to finish. When you finish it, every chapter in the game becomes playable in any order with the incentive that if you achieve all the required objectives (Kill such and such an monster, find this object) you can obtain a secret "Report" that sheds light on some aspect of the games mythology. Given the questions that are left at the end of the main plot thread (Though its tied up neat enough that you could just dump the game there) for completists  like me Ive been replaying every chapter (You dont have to replay all of it, just enough to achieve the objectives required to get the report) to get the whole story. This adds even more to the gameplay, the fact that the enjoyable combat carries this and that some of the available ability pins only become available at this point is even more incentive. After around 30 hours gameplay I currently give TWEWY a solid 8.5 out of 10.
