Sound Test
« on: January 17, 2008, 06:12:03 pm »
Quoting from the Jukebox mod thread:

Hmm, maybe a sound test mod could be next... listen to all the sounds in the game. That would be fun!

There must be sooooooo many sounds. And most of them are probably a second or two long. It would be kinda rediculous to listen to some hit noise on loop.  :D

But, it could be good. And more mods = better (unless they are that nude mod....I don't have a pole long enough to push that away... lol).

Well, I was figuring it would be done a bit differently than the Jukebox mod. Instead, it would show the names of some number of sounds at a time (maybe 16 or 20, displayed in two columns), and you could click on the name to play the sound once, rather than in a loop. You could page through the list in a similar fashion to the recipe list in the game.

I'd really like it, because it would allow me to go back and listen to dialog clips from the game. I've been toying with the idea of going ahead and doing it, but I have a son that's due to be born any time now, so I can't really commit to something like that at this point. I could get around to it eventually, when things calm down, but my feelings would not be hurt if someone else beat me to it. The main thing that would be tricksy would be getting the entire list of sound clips!

Just a hint; the voice overs are a separate system from the sound effects.

In some cases the voice files contain both voice and music, such as some parts of the intro and ending.

Yeah, I was realizing that as I was going over the modding wiki. Still need the list of the files, though. Any chance that could be forthcoming? :)

Ooh, you meant it like that:-X
Silly me!

Sure, a mod like that could work. If you make a new topic about it and ask nicely maybe someone can make it for ya'. (BTW, 'grats on your child!  :D)

Here are the names of the files that can be played with the playVoice command.

You'd do something like playVoice("naija_entersongcave")

A couple of things in here include or are music.

SPOILERS, DUH.

You can also add your own voice overs to your own mods.

After you record them, and encode them to OGG, you can throw them in your "audio" folder and then call playVoice to use them.

You can also add a text file to the audio folder with the same name as the OGG for subtitles.

i.e. "voicetest.ogg" and

"voicetest.txt":

Code: [Select]
0:00 This is a test of subtitles
0:03 Three seconds have now passed!

Very cool, Alec. Sanka.

So your point exactly is? You're gonna make a Sound Test mod?

I intend to eventually. However, as I mentioned in the comments copied over from the Jukebox thread, I have some events coming up in my life that make it unlikely that I'll have it out quickly. If someone else goes ahead and does it, my feelings won't be hurt. If nobody does, then when life stabilizes for me again, I'll do it. Either way, there's a thread for it containing the relevant information.

Well, I'd like to make it, but I don't think that just a scrolling list of sounds would be enough, and I barely know anything yet about .lua scripting.

Just a note: when playing the files, the name you pass shouldn't include the ".ogg" part.

Found a few minutes to try some stuff out. I copied the Jukebox mod as a starting point and modified it so that it plays the voice clips instead of the songs. Works pretty well, though it's not the best interface for it. Next thing is to build a better interface.

Like I said, one tab that scrolls one list doesn't work that well, maybe scroll a list with multiple things to press, or maybe a A-Z search thing.

did you fix the issue where if you hit next from an unfinished file, the previous clip will continue?

like is there a command to stop the voice?

Yes. The stopVoice() function will stop the currently playing voice. Any others that might be queued up will still play. The stopAllVoice() function will stop the current voice and clear the queue. So when you start a new clip or exit the mod, you call stopVoice() first. I've got it working pretty nicely in my hack of the jukebox mod.

Sure, I'll package it up and stick it out there when I get a moment.
