DERPMOD

The year was 1273. While King Otakar II of Bohemia was capturing Bratislava from Hungary and Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi was dying in Persia, a far less important event was taking place 744 years into the future. Namely, the shadowy release of an previously-unannounced mod for Aquaria. It's called Teh Derp. It's in the Aquaria mod list already. Go play it. Please. I'll like you if you do. Probably.

(Make sure you're running the most up-to-date version of the game! The latest version of the game can be found at http://www.bit-blot.com/forum/index.php?topic=4313.0)

No screenshots from me because I'm lazy that would be SPOILERS. But feel free to post your own here. Or don't. I don't care.

Modding / Lichter der Tiefe Mod - English Translation
« on: July 29, 2017, 04:27:45 pm »
Introducing the Lichter der Tiefe (Lights of the Deep) mod!

Lichter der Tiefe is a mod that follows the story of Emily as she explores a strange world underwater and meets a cast of characters and creatures. It features a story-driven plot, multiple endings, and some neat choices and scripting logic. It's not really a new mod; it's a German mod made in 2013 that fgenesis and I found, translated to English, and packaged up into the new mod format with the original creators' blessing.

To install, make sure you have the latest version of Aquaria: http://www.bit-blot.com/forum/index.php?topic=4313.0 and download it from the ingame mod menu. (Or you can download the mod files individually at https://github.com/AquariaOSE/Lichter_der_Tiefe/tree/master/Project. No guarantees that it'll work without the latest version of the game anyway, though)

Enjoy!

Games / Re: Game Development-- Help Needed

Why post here? There are subreddits and other forums (a la Tigsource) dedicated to things like this. Posting on a forum for an old indie game isn't going to gain you a lot of response.

To play the mod, grab at least Aquaria OSE 1.002

Please read the post at the very least, Goobla.

Ignore him, he just hates Steam for no reason. XD

IRC is indeed an Internet chat protocol that's been around since the dawn of teh interwebs. Fgenesis and I hang out there all the time, and it's basically the center of where mod development goes on. It's fun! I've got a complicated setup now, but in the past I've used Quassel - http://quassel-irc.org/ and other people recommend mIRC - http://www.mirc.com/ . It's all fairly straightforward once you get over a minor learning curve.

EDIT: Even easier, can just IRC online here without having to install anything: http://webchat.esper.net/?nick=&channels=bitblot

Epic thread gravedigging time!

I juuust finished porting the Costume Mod, Big Energy Form Battle, and Ninja Form mods to the new scripting interface yesterday, and fgenesis uploaded them to his server. This should be all the mods that have been released so far, aside from some small WIP ones. Huzzah for download mirrors that work!

Hi! Should I say something? I should probably say something.

Over the past couple of years, I've just been hanging out in the IRC channel, helping fgenesis brainstorm and otherwise nagging him and talking about programming projects. I'm quite a bug magnet while I'm playing games, so I'm doing a lot of beta-testing for this particular mod. I suppose I'm also a sort of sounding board that fgenesis bounces ideas off of. So I'm basically not helping with the mod per se, though I like to think that my role is important. ;)

Aquaria for iPad / Re: Controls are too hard
« on: January 01, 2013, 10:36:41 pm »
Yeah, sorry there isn't much we can do about it.
The best way to reach Alec is actually via twitter, so if you have one you can tweet him @infinite_ammo and he'll likely respond. Maybe even link him to this topic so he'll see it. That's about the extent of my knowledge, though, sorry.

Hmm, I think that was more of just a design decision than anything. I'm not sure how well the game would work with joystick control, but then again I haven't played the iPad version. In any case, since the iPad version has been out a while, I doubt it's likely to change anytime soon, sorry. :/

Unfortunately, they don't seem to be doing a whole lot recently in terms of game development. Alec's actually been doing a lot of soundtracks for other people's games, so I doubt he'd really need your help as it is, sorry.

I figured I'd pop in again to let everyone know that I finished my LP of the mod. YouTube playlist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utewI-zmdxo&list=PLF17ACDF4D514BBBC&index=1&feature=plpp_video

Thanks!

There won't be voiceovers
Of course, you can always clip the OGGs to sound like there's new dialog...

Sweeeet. I think you've shown me some of these before, but it's cool to see them actually being used someplace. And everybody loves some nifty parallax. IIRC there was some nice parallax in some areas (like the beginning of the game, in Mithalas, etc), but not as much as there could've been in some areas (Energy form temple; even the Veil seemed fairly empty to me). Good job on all the awesome-looking maps and such you have so far, and hopefully some more fun brainstorming times to come on IRC, wot wot?

Off-Topic / Re: OUYA, a new open console based on Android
« on: July 12, 2012, 10:32:55 pm »
There's a lot of great games that should be on there. I voted World of Goo, Aquaria, Little Inferno, Bastion and Trine franchise.

I'm personally watching this fairly closely. I think it looks cool, and I don't even like consoles or console games. This may change that. Only thing that has me concerned is 1 GB RAM. Why only 1GB and not 2, 4, or 8? I was looking at laptops recently, and quite a lot of midrange ones have 8. 1 GB is a fairly limiting amount; I hope they have slots where you can slap more in, or increase the amount of RAM the OUYA has. Though if they're selling it for $100, that may be why there's only 1 GB.

It all depends on how well it does. If they do a good job marketing, and word-of-mouth is in their favor, and a lot of people back their kickstarter, this has the potential to change consoles forever. And a lot of developers may boycott the current consoles there are or get them to open up the development and publishing process more. Which imo is fantastic.

EDIT: Or if it fails, Penny Arcade has a list of downsides: http://penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/the-reality-of-the-ouya-console-doesnt-match-the-hype-why-you-should-be-ske

Whatever. I'll definitely be watching it to see how it does. I'm neither super hyped nor super skeptical.

Wait, there wasn't THAT much dangerous stuff in the beginning, was there? All I remember that was particularly hard to avoid were sharks and swordfish. Swordfish are easy to dodge, and sharks don't have the best homing AI either. I think I got hurt when I was playing through the area in my LP some, but I'm a terrible player. And the area with worms was optional; I just avoided that place on my first time through.

I guess that is a good question, though: is this mod targeted at people who never played Aquaria before (Or at least never finished it), or at people who've played before? Because if it's for total newbies, it's fairly hard, but I personally was never able to get past Mithala without cheating, and I played through this mod in only a couple days, with 0 deaths. Ok, maybe 1 death. But it wasn't that hard for me.
