Games / Re: Diablo 3
« on: September 30, 2008, 04:00:35 pm »
People need to chill out. If you're a true fan of the series then embrace the creativity of the developer and allow them to create a game that they feel is a worthy sequel.

Personally I think the new visual style is fine.

I like Diablo , but I do agree with the complaints. It makes no sense to also make it as colorful as WoW (which I totally hated, I might have played that game if it had more 'mature' graphics).

Diablo is not supposed to be a kids game and to some extent the happy graphics just don't fit very well in my opinion. Having said all that though, I'd still buy the game as I'm hyped enough about playing a new Diablo game. Same goes for Starcraft II by the way, those graphics are rather colorful also... which I don't like either. Sure Starcraft 1 was colorful, but that's mainly a result of when it was released and so on...

Okay, this is gamer confessions, I think it's about what kind of embarrassing things you've done with consoles when you were a kid or something. Even when you weren't a kid.

Aah, yes, mmm, I know..., more drama! :p Mmm, let me think... naah, there's not much embarrassing for me to admit I think.

  • Consider Prince of Persia: Sands of Time the most overrated game I've ever played

I couldn't disagree more, lol, I consider it to be probably the very best game of all games. It's on the same level as the original Prince of Persia, but even better... Basically it has it all, interesting and cool gameplay, great story and excellent storytelling, enough length for the bucks you pay for it and even some replay value because of all this. It one of the few games I still play actually. I don't play Crysis anymore, don't play Quake Wars anymore, don't play Supreme Commander anymore etc. , I don't play a lot of the 'current' top games anymore. But I do play the Prince of Persia trilogy games still. I also occasionally play Duke 3D and the original Quake 1, definitely games that belong in my personal top 5 of Best games ever.

  • I consider WoW to be the most overrated game ever (probably right about it too, ey? ;) )
  • I believe the Orange Box is extremely overrated
  • ...eventhough I did love Portal
  • I didn't like Crysis because they made the same mistake as they did with Far Cry basically, aliens or mutants: whatever..!?!
  • I consider Silent Hunter 4 and X3:Reunion to be great games
  • I think Bioshock didn't live up to it's hype, eventhough it was pretty awesome (the gameplay was pretty shallow actually and I just wanted another System Shock :p )

I'll confess that I couldn't care less about what other people thought about anything.  My opinions are the only ones that matter to me.

Same here, but if people have good arguments... I might change my mind, so basically other people's opinions do matter to me. It's (not impossible but) unlikely that I will follow hypes though, I'm anti-hyped games. ;)

Games / Re: Duke Nukem Forever - Teaser TOMORROW!
« on: January 24, 2008, 03:12:23 pm »
The Duke Nukem Forever that ran on the Unreal Engine II looked great and the finished trailer they showed back then had all ingredients for a great and fun game.... BUT it did already look pretty outdated graphics-wise. I think that has been the main reason why they decided,  'screw it we're starting over' .... Basically gameplay-wise it had it all, levels seemed good, some nice rail gameplay action sequences and so on. Didn't do much wrong.... still, I'm glad they've decided to go on. They could also have simply canned the whole thing.

WoW... the worst invention ever.  :-X Besides, how come they claim it's the best MMO when Lineage II has over 17 million players worldwide? WoW has only close to 9 million.....

Anyways, not that relevant. I think most MMO games really aren't my thing, especially because of the monthly fee, but also because of the grinding.

I think the only reason so many people play WoW is because of the social aspect of the game, being in a VR world with "friends" ...

It was a mistake to release the teaser, I think, but they said all over the place that it was just a dumb little thing 2 guys stayed up late putting together for their company Christmas party.  Then they thought... hell, they did the work, let's put it on the internet.  So they did.

This I had not heard! It does make me look at it as a trailer in a slightly more favourable light, but you're right, they really shouldn't have broken radio silence with this. I doubt anyone would've given it a second look if it weren't what, two years since the last peep anyone heard out of 3DR about this.

Do I come accross as taking this stuff personally? I'm really not! I just think this is a pretty lousy trailer for the world's most persisetent whisp of vapourware, and that 3DR are probably aware of the negative reputation their oft-delayed title has garnered over the last decade and should probably be extraordinarily careful about their media releases in future if they're to salvage it.

Don't worry, 3DRealms has already said before this little teaser was released that the *real* trailer would follow "shortly".... Whatever they mean with "shortly" off course, I guess they really mean "when it's done". ;)
Anyways, I wouldn't be too sad about how this teaser turned out, it wasn't quite 'the real thing'. I actually liked the mini teaser, mainly because a lot of people keep saying it's dead as a dodo.

Thanks to the TC for mentioning Portal as its own entity instead of as "The Orange Box" which is not a game, but rather a collection of games, most of which really aren't that good in the first place.  Portal is certainly worthy of its own identity other than being simply known as the puzzle section of a pack of rehashware.

Finally some people that agree. ;-) Half-life2:ep 2 is okey, it's better than Episode 1 for sure, but it still gets way too high ratings. It's still just Half-life2 with a fancy name, perhaps looking a tiny tad better than HL2: ep 1 did.

I think the art style of Team Fortress 2 is cool and funny, but the game itself is quite a joke. It's unbalanced as heck and weren't those Team Fortress people the ones who said 'yeah, we would make a game in which all characters will be played, because none will be superior to the other class'? Well .. they didn't quite manage to do that lol.  ^-^ The amount of maps you get is quite pathetic too, I mean really for a multiplayer focused title you would expect at least a dozen maps or so. I have to say that the maps themselves aren't really that bad.

As good as the original HL2 was, adding it to the box really doesn't make it score more points for me, especially because I already owned it and now I own it twice. For people saying 'yeah, but perhaps other people didn't have HL2 yet', true that may be true for some people.. but people looking for an expansion will always own the game already. Now why didn't Valve cut the price in 5 equal pieces so we can buy the games separate from Steam without having to scratch our head wondering why it's so much more expensive as individual titles.

Off course the console version of the Orange Box is a different story, but even then the whole hype around the Orange Box tastes funny, wouldn't you agree?

The one game that's worth buying the Orange Box for would be Portal. It's really a very good game and although 6 hours or so of gameplay isn't that long and the levels could have been as interesting as the last few levels, I think it does deserve the title of Best Game of 2007. Alone that is!  ^-^

I really don't understand why the Orange Box get reviews for the package as a whole instead of the games separately.

Runner up would have to be: Assassin's Creed , very good game, very interesting sandbox style and story and I'm a sucker for doing all these Prince of Persia-like acrobatics.

It is one of the best designed games I've ever played (and it has nothing to do with the Portal Mechanism).

True, it's very polished, not much to complain there.

Aah, I forgot the Indie Game of 2007, I've got to agree with Gametunnel here; Aquaria!!

Yeah, I've done some thinking, but it's hard to pinpoint exactly what made GTA:San Andreas not as brilliant as I had hoped for. Perhaps it was too much of a 'been there done that' experience or something.

The big world is still impressive and there's a lot to do (120+ hours of gameplay I heard? haven't spend that much time with it though).

Oops, I meant to say GTA:SA was overrated. I loved the first and second GTA a LOT. GTA III wasn't bad in that it was something never done before ( for the most part, just think of Interstate '82 )  and therefore pretty brilliant, but I probably like GTA: Vice city best of the 3D versions.

The GTA clones out there usually are horrible indeed, eventhough I liked Driver: Parallel Lines quite a bit.

edit: edited some more.

here are the rules
1. you are always playing the game
2. when you are told of the game you are playing
3. you can never win you can only lose
4. if you remember the game you must announce out loud "I lost"
5.after you announce that you lost the game you have 30min before you can lose the game
6.the goal is to have the whole world playing
7.????????
8.PROFIT

also i lost

It's instant win ... if 1. is true, then 6. is already accomplished, they just don't know it yet.

Nice to see other Soul Reaver fans.  I've been a huge fan of the series but totally crapped out and never played Defiance, even though I have a copy laying around somewhere.  I'd totally forgotten about it.

Yeah, it's an excellent series! Defiance is worth playing through! It has some of the best level design I've ever encountered in games up to now. Together with Prince of Persia Sands of Time (and more or less the two sequels too) definitely worth playing.

I liked Blood Omen 2: Legacy of Kain too, by the way, although it's not as good as Defiance or Soul Reaver II for sure.

I forgot to add Interstate '82 to my list of all-time favorite games... dang, how could I forget about that one.

Rockstar doesn't disappoint most of the time, but I didn't like San Andreas very much at all. I think that GTA is overrated, but I'm glad GTAIV is going to be more like GTAIII but more "realistic" and with an awesome main character style. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Games / Re: Bioshock
« on: December 13, 2007, 10:57:29 pm »
BioShock also disappointed me, but the weird thing is, I don't really know why.

Same feeling here. I do like the game a lot, but somehow it isn't very encouraging me to play any further. The gameplay feels very repetitive eventhough some aspects of it probably are not and the leveldesign is well done most of the time. I think it's because the game isn't as much RPG-ish as I had hoped.

The game looks absolutely gorgeous, but it's true ... good looks don't make a brilliant game. The art deco style rocks and is well done and totally fits the utopia/dystopia idea and feeling, but there's not much underneath that. The game's first impression on me was very good, but after a few levels you come to realize that it has some serious flaws.

The Vita chambers are a joke... it doesn't make sense at all, because you can kill big daddies just by dying and then go back at them and hit 'em with a melee weapon over and over. At some point they will die. I agree that it feels like cheating indeed.

Why are little sisters invulnerable when big daddies are around them? It would have been cool if you could trick a Big Daddy into following you and then kidnap the little sisters somehow. I understand they wanted the actual 'moral choice' to be something a player had to deserve, but then again the idea behind the choice you have is quite wrong too in my opinion.

For an action-orientated RPG/shooter I think they don't give enough ammo either. Useful items are a bit too scarcely spread too and I don't like the fact that they don't seem to 'respawn'. System Shock 2 was better balanced in this respect.

I think the game lacks in that it doesn't really provide the player with the feeling of having accomplished anything. The story is good, yes... and quite disturbing, but in terms of gameplay it's rather dull. Even by the time you've got some nice special powers and so on. The game has it's excellent moments and I loved the ending.

General / Re: Steam?

I also agree that using steam would be a good idea mainly the wide range of people and the stats says there are about 3,023,137 unique players per month

Yeah, and the total amount of unique Steam-users is even higher because it consists of all Halflife2 players and then some, because of the activation through Steam of Valve's games. More than enough potential customers I'd say, although those people tend to be FPS loving freaks and not so much casual or indie game lovers, but still ...
