Title: screenshots [[ spoilers ]]
Post by: inkblob on February 05, 2008, 04:24:23 am
I couldn't find a thread that was for screenies taken throughout the game and have been taking some shots of interesting situations, so here's some to get it rolling:

just hanging out with a slug

nature vacume fishing

get off of me you replenishing tadpoles of joy!

took this a couple of weeks ago and think it was hard to get to or something

whoa... what did you put in that soup...?

Yeah, nice idea with the topic, although I think it should be posted into the "general discussion" thread instead of gameplay. Anyways, nice screenshots  :D

I'll post few of mine too  :)

No it should be in gameplay, seeing they are spoilers and they are screens OF the gameplay. =p

I used to have loads of funny screens, but for some reason I removed them, I have no hellish clue why I did. >_<

I'll post them when I find some again. ^-^

I can't remember where I saw these snails in the game (but  saw them)... anyone give me a hint?

Like near the beginning of the open waters, and somewhere else too with a huge one in the background, don't really know for sure though.

And normally they have SHELLS on their back.

@Xiagan: Yup, they're at the beggining of the open waters, when you can swim down through some kind of a long cave the the next location, and there was a huge snail in the background   :)

that's sort of why he's not climbing on the edge of the wall  ;)

the map just below the snail cave was torture the first time through but now it's a bizarre playground, a few of those were taken in that area.

happy wherever it lands, but thought I'd be posting maps and forms not shown in any of the demo videos, and am half wondering if just that is ok?

I never think of taking screenshots.  I tried once, but every time I tried to find a photogenic spot...I couldn't find a single one.  I kept thinking to myself "The veil is pretty I should go there."  But every time I tried to find a good screenshot, I kept thinking "But this screen doesn't have this and that and those would make great pictures."  I could never find a single picture that captured any given area as well as I would like...so I ended up taking no pictures at all...Aquaria is a world that really needs to be experienced first-hand.

Thanks, I totally forgot about the snake passage. :) I just made my way to the abyss with only Energy Form and the part between the Abyss and the Snails is really tough, you're right.

I haven't made screenies too, but maybe I'll do some in my second run. :)

Hi,

How to get at the place in the screenshot number 4? What does turtle with its mouth open, and the face of a female in the screenshot stand for?

I think that I was just persistently jumping until I got up there, might have used soup tho.  the female face is Naija's location and the turtle is: the turtle cave, there's a couple of treasures in that cave system

Which soup did you use?

And what is there at the female icon location? Any treasures?

It's actually possible to climb all the way up the cliff above that spot using nature form.  No food is required, but it's pretty tough to pull off.

Not quite as bad as the frozen veil though, where you can actually jump off the edge of the map, heh.

Bind a rock and drag it to it. That's pretty much all it does. Not everything in this game has a specific use.

There are no details. It does nothing, or at least nobody here has found out if it is doing something special...

Gorvin, I was there too but I decided not to fall in the small gap. ;) Were you able to climb out?

Use the bind spell, the spell to grab stuff in he water, near a rock so that you grab the rock, move towards the turtle whiel still having the rock behind you and the turtle will go away.

Nope.  I think it would be *possible* to climb back out using nature form cactuses, but without being able to see myself offscreen I felt it would have been too much of a pain to bother with after a couple tries.

Gorvin you rawk. I don't totally get how to do that with Nature form, jump *around* your briar when it's poking out horizontally? do you try and aim it slightly pointing up and jump straight off your lower briar board? I get that much in principle, but then what, you are now to far 'in' to jump to a straight out horizontal briar.  I'm totally down with being all spidey with Nature, just don't get how.  regardless, I bow to your obsessive exploratory glitchyness  :)

Actually, I didn't fire off the horizontal briars until after I had jumped.  What I did was to jump up off of the first briar, then fire a briar into the wall while I was in mid air and end up landing on top of it.  It had to be timed right so that the seed would land and sprout out after I had passed over the spot it would grow at.

There are two briars in the screenshot because beforehand I landed on the *tip* of a briar higher up, and by clinging on to the tip at an angle, I would have only been able to jump away from the wall.  So I shot 3 more briar seeds, which caused the briar I was on to retract, pulling me in towards the wall and dropping me down to the briars I planted underneath it.

cool, think I get the premise here. it's like wall jumping, you have to keep the momentum going and everything well timed or it all falls apart! definitly will have to try that out.

I just made a recording of it, if anyone cares: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6B3FbMsxMU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6B3FbMsxMU)

By the way, when I started recording I was getting much shorter jumps off of the briars than usual.  I turned down the recording rate so that it wouldn't affect the game's framerate as much, and was able to get longer distance jumps off of the briars again (but still worse than I normally get).  I'd have to test it out some more to be sure, but it seems that framerate may affect how far you're able to jump off of the briars (having a lower framerate = worse jumps).  It didn't seem to affect jumps off of other objects though.

Thanks for posting that vid. Its cool to see how people play.

There may be a frame rate dependency issue with the jumping, I'll take a look when I get a chance.

I tried to do that same trick.  I never really continued on with it though once I realized I was going outside the intended scope of the game, you know?  It's cool how it works, but it would have been nice to see if it lead somewhere super secret.  I guess Alec didn't think of it.

For me, that actually made me more motivated to keep trying.  There's something satisfying about knowing you did something the developers didn't think you could do.

Some more screenshots from hard to reach areas. :o

I spent some time trying to get up here about a month and a half ago before I stopped playing the game, but it got too tedious having to climb all the way back up after every failed attempt, so I gave up then.

I gave it another go today, and after several failed attempts of this...

... I tried another method.  I went to the hill with the temple on it and briar-rocketed myself over.  By "briar-rocket" I mean this: I jumped onto a brair aimed in the northeast direction, then planted another briar that would hit me as it sprouted out.  Sometimes when doing this, it would only push me a few feet, while other times it would send me flying at insane velocities.  I wish I could get a recording of it, but the aforementioned framerate issue made it impossible.

Like in the frozen veil, you can fall off the map here.  You can also swim down and actually go underneath the map.  While swimming underneath the map, I found a spot where there was a sonar icon on the mini-map.  I wasn't able to enter it or anything though.

Used another briar-rocket to reach this.

Unfortunately, that was as far up as I got before I accidentally briar-rocketed myself away.   :-[

Another briar-rocket to get up here.  I found something strange up in the northwest corner here.  No idea wtf is up with it.

Hehe, all very nice work. And I think that that thing in the upper right corner is just a jellyfish or so. I noticed that in alot of maps there are enough things in the left upper corner that aren't used UNTIL a certain point, so they need to be idle there.

Incredible places! Next screenie will be Naija, first meremaid on the moon. ;)

It's the kind of shooting jellyfish you get in the deeper parts of open water I guess...

It looks like one of those jellyfish whose only purpose is to die and produce blue shinies.  I never mastered the art of "Briar Rocketting" as you've coined it.  Whenever I try it just ends up with me doing the equivalent of a normal jump.  That's certainly some handy mountaineering you're doing though.  Hope Naija doesn't dry out.

I never mastered the art of "Briar Rocketting" as you've coined it.  Whenever I try it just ends up with me doing the equivalent of a normal jump.

It's definitely pretty finicky, and seemed to be easier to get it to happen at some locations than others.  Sometimes I'd not be able to get the glitch to work at all at a certain location in the map, then later come back to that location and be able to get it to happen consistently.  I've been able to get it with near 100% consistency at this location, so you might want to try it out there:

It's kind of an out of the way area (just past a long wall-jump sequence), but once there you can aim yourself at the ceiling to see if you can get it to work, so you don't shoot yourself off of the cliff before you're ready.

At first I thought it was framerate that was causing the physics glitch, because I seemed to be getting it easier in high-up areas where there were little/no enemies nearby and very little terrain to render.  But then I tried intentionally lagging the framerate by recording with a high sample rate while I was at the above location, and I was still able to do both the briar rocket and high jumps off of briars (I had tried recording when I was attempting the rocket technique before though, and it had seemed to prevent me from doing it).  I really have no idea what's going on with it now then.

Video of the briar rocket glitch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j5PxSr3ULo

So you plant a briar, then go sit on it and plant on on the exact same spot? Sounds easy, or I should say, looks easy.
Title: Re: screenshots [[ spoilers ]]
Post by: Glamador on February 16, 2008, 06:53:04 pm
Yet whenever I attempt it, it's more like a briar hop.  I did manage to do it once by accident in the frozen veil though.  I think the trick is to plant it so the briar is perfectly perpendicular to Naija (A.K.A. pointing straight into her stomach).
Title: Re: screenshots [[ spoilers ]]
Post by: Gorvin on February 16, 2008, 09:40:38 pm
The thing is, I've had it happen at a number of different angles and offsets, so I don't think it matters too much how you plant your briars.  It just seems to be easy from me to get to happen sometimes, and impossible at other times.  But at this point, I think trying to figure out what's going on with it is going to drive me insane.

I'm so going to try that out. if I had my act together enough to make a mod it would be to do something crazy with nature form using some of these wak techniques to get to silly places. Gorvin, you're like some kind of briarnaut.
Title: Re: screenshots [[ spoilers ]]
Post by: inkblob on February 18, 2008, 04:45:31 am
I didn't have the same success as Gorvin, but did manage to get to some previously un-Naija'd places via briarnauting. I'm not sure if it was briar-rocketing or just really good lobbing tho.

this one I've been able to get to before in beast form from the left hand side jumping over. this time I scaled it using nature form platforming. definitely finicky, holding down a charge, jumping up and aiming below you to land on a briar. I found clinging to a rock and shooting a briar just below me, jumping back and forth between the acute angel till I got nearer to the tip and then jumping to the next section of the wall also worked effectively.

this one was jumping from the Ruhk egg area, took a few tries to get to the sun temple section, I used the palm tree by the nest as a marker and I think based the launch angle on that. I wasn't able to make it over to the next higher ledge on the right, I was just briar lobbing into the water.

while I was up there though I had good times hunting my mortal enemy, the flying, rainbow serpent but it seemed impervious to even my most diabolical entrapments:
