Corruption might not be the best word to describe this wonderful delight of a game. Quite the opposite in fact. Other than Twilight Princess, this game comes as close to perfection as any game as come on the Wii console so far. More so than any other Metroid game before, Corruption has the most adventure feel to it while still redefining FPS action. The only minor quibbles I've had with the game so far - and I've almost beat it 100 percent - is some of the backtracking, interaction mini-games, the easy difficulty, and the predictability of the story even though it's the best plot of the entire series. But these problems are minor, very minor. The graphics and artistic design of the game is so good it easily holds its own against the big guns of the Xbox 360 and PS3, the FPS controls make you feel like you never want to play with the keyboard/mice or dual analog setup ever again, and with so many achievements, secrets, and unlockables in the game, this game is EPIC.
In short: Best Metroid Game Ever!
What do you guys think? The series has expanded in nearly every ways. You can call your ship to different locations and order it to attack certain enemies and areas, as well as grapple onto objects for certain missions. The theme of the grapple beam has three major uses now: latching onto enemies and ripping them to shreds, swinging to areas, and to energize or drain energy from certain devices. You get a Hypermode of sorts that helps in battles at the expense of an Energy Tank, but later in the game many enemies can do that same thing. Expanding on the idea of finding more missile expansions, you can also get missiles for your ship, which means finding missile expansions for that. When you can easily get over 200 hundred missiles for your arm cannon, what are you to do? Get a multi-missile cannon! Yep, you heard me right. Retro Studios didn't stop there though, for they threw in a quest to find eight Energy Cells - not energy tanks - which I wont say what for, thats a surprise. In total, there is 100 things to find, and a ton more to scan.
So again, what do you think?
-
It's not out on my side of the pond for like another month, but I'm going to try my damndest to build an Arm Cannon wiimote cradle before then.
-
I need one more item to beat the game 100 %

In short: Best Metroid Game Ever!
People said that for every new Metroid during the 6 month that followed the release of the game.
Just like every Final Fantasy game, every Zelda game, every Metal Gear Solid game and so on...
This is just called "buzz effect".

I disagree. MGS2 sucked from the beginning of the "toxic chemical spill cleanup facility," and Raiden was tool from day 1.

Yup, but fans firstly said that it was better than the first MGS, then they changed their minds.

I DIDN'T! I HATED IT FROM THE BEGINNING!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Of course, I didn't actually get to play the game until it had been out for a year, and, while I really liked MGS, I am not a fanboi by any stretch. ;)
xander
-
Yeah, so you avoided the buzz effect and you saw the game like it actually was
-
I don't think its better than the first, but I still like it a lot. I don't mind Raiden's character, (actually, really love it when creators mess with people's expectations) and the 4th wall destruction stuff near the end of the game is always great.

/me hopes against hope that Aquaria doesn't turn out to be Sexy Hiking Mark II
-
Hah!. See, you're expecting Sexy Hiking Mark II now, so we can release underwater pong (pong tinted blue) and you'll be impressed.
(well that's not really fair, Sexy Hiking was pretty genius)
-
First thing I'll do is turn Naija into Sexy Hiking Man. Oh, yes.
And I happened to enjoy MGS2. So there. Although Raiden sucked.

First of all, how many here have played Corruption? Secondly, do you guys just hate MGS2 because Snake wasn't the main character? The Metal Gear Solid series was never based solely on Snake, but on the theme of corrupt governments. In first three games of the Solid series, Snake is only the main character in the first one.

With regards to MGS2, the inclusion of Snake at the beginning was a bit of a cock-tease; Raiden sucked; the forth-wall breaking got really annoying, and, in my opinion, kind of made the first part of the game (on the tanker) pointless. That, and the fact that the new agey, post-modern take on genetics and memory, and the determinism of genes really, really did not sit well with me. It is something that has bothered me about all of the MGS games, but 2 was particularly bad.

The beginning is a fun mini adventure in its own right. Its a total set up to fool you. Sweet!
The fourth wall breaking stuff was great and unsettling, provided you were invested in the game.
I imagine you sitting there playing it with your head tilted to one side, using only one eye to look at the screen while holding your nose, periodically jotting down notes of all the stuff you hate as you furiously keep playing for some unknown reason. :)
EDIT: Should also add that while Raiden is a weak/unskilled player, he makes Snake look a million times more awesome, which has a neat effect on the whole series. Its like seeing the story from another angle.

Yes, I must be an elitest for not sharing the same opinion as you. ::) The game just didn't work for me. It worked for you. That is no reason for you caricature me. And, to be clear, I didn't say that I hated the game. The gameplay, as with the other MGS games, was rather brilliant. The original Super Mario Bros has a stupid plot (a plumber without a good map goes from castle to castle searching for a lost princess), but is a great game. I enjoyed playing MGS 2, but had a hard time getting over the plot (fortunately, it was possible to skip most of the cutscenes).

Aww, I'm just teasing. ^-^
I am kind of curious why you'd play all the way through to the end if you disliked it that much though.
EDIT:
Thing is about MGS plots... the only thing I really expect from them is to get me confused and interested.... and present me with many WTF moments.
e.g. when the President grabs Raiden's balls and then is like "You're a man??"
The section where Raiden is running around naked and somehow manages to cover up whilst doing so.
That crazy fat boss that throws bombs at you while riding around on roller skates and sipping drinks.
I love how the voice actors get to ham it up too.
I don't know, there's just nothing that mixes things up quite like MGS.
-
I'd have to agree with Alec.
All I can say is thank god for Hideo Kojima! Not a stale tale in his repertoire. Best way I can describe it is, I enjoy getting lost in his stories so much that I forget I'm even playing a game or how much time has passed while doing so. I know, not everyone is a fan, but I've played through all of the MGS games at least 3 times... except the original Metal Gear (the nes version), played through it twice (had to prove that I passed it to a friend). The MGS games weren't just a cinematic treat either, the gameplay progressing the story was just as interesting. Graphics were complimented by an excellent use of sound. On top of that, there were so many other little things you could see and do with plenty of hidden easter eggs for persistent gamers. I can't imagine how bland some of todays games would be without Kojima-San and his powerful influence and amazing development direction which was equaled only by his sense of style and humor.
That MGS4 trailer has been making me drool. I wonder if the Raiden/Vamp fight will be part of the final product?
Can't wait... ;D
-
I've only played the first MGS (although I did try Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, but only 5 minutes since the controls were rather bad. It's interesting that MGS is in fact the third Metal Gear) and I must say that overall I agree with xander.
MGS is a great game, with a really good gameplay and atmosphere. But the story sucks. The game can be really cool up until the fight with Psycho Mantis, but after that it becomes a bit silly (I expect MGS2 to be about the same). I can't really decide if the Gene stuff they babble about is funny or downright sad.

I didn't played Metroid Corruption yet ( apparently because game developpers hate Europe...) but I'm a huge fan of the franchise. It is my most wanted game with Super Mario Galaxy and Aquaria (of course ;) ) and I just can't wait to play it.
I just said that players always say when a new game from a franchise is out that it is the best of the franchise, and that it might change within a few months. I never said that Corruption was a bad game, and I seriously hope that it is indeed the best game in the Metroid saga.

I disliked the story, and the characters, but really liked the gameplay. The ability to skip the cutscenes made MGS2 a good game.

I'm of the opinion that the silliness is part of its greatness. I love how some people were offended by how you could get in a barrel and roll down a hill to knock over soldiers in MGS4. I'm like... its Metal Gear Solid! Its all about being ridiculous.
There's plenty of "serious" stealth games like Splinter Cell. (shudders)
-
Erf! I hate Splinter Cell, it is one of thoses games where you must follow perfectly the only way to go through the level that the developpers decided for us. It's just... It's just too realistic! I love games with some kind of fantasy in it.
I don't play games to find something meant to look like the real world, when I play I some kind of want to escape from this reality. And with Splinter Cell I really don't.
-
It's just... It's just too realistic!
Indeed. LIFE IS LINEAR.
-

I'm not sure I follow you. I played Pandora Tomorrow recently, and while the levels were linear I could still choose how to pass many parts (although I admit it might not be the same with the original Splinter Cell). MGS isn't definitely better at it.
Heck, I'm currently playing Unreal 2, it's far more linear Pandora Tomorrow.
-
I just played to the first and the last game of the series XD
The last one is suppossed not to be linear, you choose to act like a good or a bad person, but it hadn't strucked me for the little I played the game.

They don't say that about EVERY game. But most of the time, each Zelda game is better then the one before it in one way or another. That said, Sunshine wasnt the best mario game. Wind Waker wasnt the best Zelda, Echeos wasnt the best Metroid.
Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 3 Corruption are the best Zelda and Metroid games. They really are.
-
I think Wind Waker was pretty damn brilliant. For my money, it had the strongest story-based motivation of any of the preceding Zelda games - i.e. you did things to find out what happens next. Also, the fighting system - with notes playing on successive hits etc. - I found to be more involving than previous games.
-

I don't know for Corruption, but personnaly I think that Twilight Princess is the worst Zelda ever, apart of the CDi games XD
I was really disappointed by this game, I really prefered Wind Waker.
I don't know if it is like that across the ocean, but in Europe most fans considers Majora's Mask as the best Zelda game.
-
:D Finally got it.
My god it is just amazing!
But it's way too easy with the Hypermode. I tried several times to beat the ice boss without it and Ialways died before he lost half of his life. Then I tried with the Hypermode, he died within a minute -_-'
-
Which is why you BE A MAN. Don't use Hypermode unless THEY go into Hypermode!
-
Yeah, when an ennemy is in hypermode it's almost impossible to beat him without the hypermode.
The boss of the second planet -the huge golem- was kinda tricky since to beat him we were forced to dive in hypermode one time for each weak point and that we don't have enough life to do it if you get hit when you try to make his weak point reachable.
Geez, the third planet is just amazing. All theses clockworth... ^^ (Not sure this is the right word bu still)
-
Oh god, the third planet...Breathtaking.
And fun, too. XD
-
Finally something Challenging. The Kraken-looking Metroid who breeds thoses little unbearable monsters XD
My first death.
-
I loved Prime 1.
Actually imported an American Gamecube to Europe to play it earlier.
Didn't love Prime 2 so much, never even finished it.
Totally fell in Love with Prime 3 again.
I like the direction they took with smaller worlds, while delivering the classic Metroid flavor.
And I've always loved, adored, admired and worshipped Retro's art design.
But with Prime 3 the art-team again outdoes it's self.
Such amazing, imaginative and unique world they built. Simply beautiful.
-
I have to agree. Prime 3 is one of the finest videogames ever made. I don't know if it's better than the first Prime though. Design wise. But playability it just eats everything else out there.
See also Metal of Honor Heroes 2. I hate WW II FPS games. But the controls are so well done...
