Some questions for all your esteemed selves:
1. Are there only the three locations where rukh eggs can be found; the one highest on the far right of the veil, one just below that one on a different ledge, and one in the bubble cave on the right?
2. How on earth do you get to that second one? I can get to the far right top one no problem, I can get the bubble cave one with soup and so on, but the means to reach that last bird without flying are not clear to me. It seems like the angle of attack is all wrong for soup-jumping it, on top of it being too far away.
3. Can you get otters in the ice veil to give you what they're holding? I've tried singing to them, binding them, and shooting them but they won't give it up.
4. Does plain ice cream do anything other than make her go "Mmm!"? I know it's an ingredient in the dumbo something-or-other ice cream, but I mean aside from that.
5. Getting Naija's final memory (in location ???, about the crib) seemed pretty anticlimactic. Is there more to it that I missed, or does it just change later facets of the game without it being obvious that it does so?
6. When Naija has found all of the verse egg health upgrade thingies, is the minimap completely encircled by her health, or is there a small gap? I don't need to know how many there are or if there's just one left or where they are, only whether I need to look more or not.
I can rephrase these tomorrow if they're not clear, I'm kinda tired...
-
1. I guess so - I was only aware of two
2. No idea
3. I think they're just a fun animal. Also aren't they bears? :)
4. It's just a precursor to another food.
5. Get all the memories and get a fancy reward when you finish the game.
6. Completely encircled yes.
-
3. Yes. Swim up to an otter and boost just before you collide with it. Do this twice and the otter will drop what it's holding. For obvious reasons, this doesn't work in Beast Form.

Hi Zeke :D

As far as I know no one has ever reached those two bird so they might just be background but please don't quote me on that?
3. Can you get otters in the ice veil to give you what they're holding? I've tried singing to them, binding them, and shooting them but they won't give it up.
Robert's already answered this one and he's right, Don't use beast form unless you have already collected the item and I don't know if eating one of them increases your health because I haven't tried it yet?
4. Does plain ice cream do anything other than make her go "Mmm!"? I know it's an ingredient in the dumbo something-or-other ice cream, but I mean aside from that.
Nope nothing just like many of the basic foods they are just ingredients.
5. Getting Naija's final memory (in location ???, about the crib) seemed pretty anticlimactic. Is there more to it that I missed, or does it just change later facets of the game without it being obvious that it does so?
Let's just say that if you don't get all of them you will soon want to try finishing the game with all of them ;D
6. When Naija has found all of the verse egg health upgrade thingies, is the minimap completely encircled by her health, or is there a small gap? I don't need to know how many there are or if there's just one left or where they are, only whether I need to look more or not.

No it's phrased quite clearly and yes the ring will be fully charged without a gap when she has all her health :)

where did you find out about the 2nd ledge egg? I've managed to briar rocket to different areas of the map but never to that ledge, it's often bothered me. plus the waterfall just below it dosn't quite get you there... Is there a video or a save game floating out there of the game *without* all the memories? I realized yesterday that I havn't seen that ending! I *just* got my last memory in the session I'm playing now, so I could in theory dial that back and leave getting the memory for very last, but... I'd have to do the gauntlet and final boss twice and that's not so appetizing :o
-
When you're on your way up to the higher of the two birds, you can see the lower one sitting in its nest on the other side of the left wall of the chimney.
Thank you all for your help and tips (especially about the otters)! I'll bump this if I find a way to get to that tricksy rukh, or if there's other stuff I think of to ask about.
-
Do you mean to say that there's another bird above the other up the chimney? I plead ignorance. :) I'll probably spend an hour trying to reach it (probably unsuccessfully). ::)
-
I didn't realize there were two there either, I'll have to go back and check it out when I'm at home. Currently at work on duty; have to be here for 24 hours. :/
-

I would say rather, there's another bird below the top one in the chimney. Just to be thorough:
In the far right section of The Veil, opposite the entrance to the Sun Temple, is the darkened, current-ridden entrance to the chimney. The chimney has three levels:
The lowest level has a verse-note plant, and a waterfall spilling over the left edge down into the water; sometimes you can sort of flip yourself up over this edge from within the waterfall, but it's tricky and not worth it to do.
The middle level has a rukh bird on it, and I can't get to it. There's no entrance to this middle level from the chimney, but the edge is shorter than either the top or bottom edges, meaning you could conceivably jump to it from the lowest level, but not at all from the top level without rappelling or something. On the way up to the top level of the chimney, the walls widen a bit, and clinging to the left wall at this widening is where the bird can be seen.
On the topmost level is a second rukh, this being the easiest one to get to and farm eggs from.
I'll try briar-jumping, which hadn't occurred to me, and report back.
-
Zeke tells the truth. I found them today in my exploring. I said to myself "oho, a tiny grey area of the map in what looks like a small nook!" and yes, it seems almost quite impossible to jump to there from any angle - whether it be above, below or from the left. Doesn't look like there's a hidden tunnel on the way up the chimney either.
-
If you save up a scream in dual form and jump up there as pink (since you can't spin while clinging to change forms), when it zooms out to do it you can see that there are actually two rukhs there. You can also see that a parrot flies right into the nook from way over to the left near the Sun Temple exit. However, you cannot cling to parrots. You can't bind parrots and get pulled along by them. You can't like, springboard off of parrots so far as I can tell. It's definitely too far to soup-jump from the left, as was mentioned.
Briar-boosting (planting one of those spiky phallic things directly below yourself, which then launches you away from the point of planting) doesn't work for getting there from below, as there aren't any flat places to do it; they all face outward. If you could jump at acute angles in plant form off of briar rods, instead of only normal to their surface, it could be done by putting a rod sticking down and to the left from the middle ledge, and putting another rod perpendicular to it lower down on the lower ledge, and jumping up on those. But for some reason nature form got the short straw for jumping capability.
As an aside, I completely forgot the fourth, highest level that caps off the chimney and ends on the right at the edge of the sky. I can get tantalizingly close to getting on there by briar-boosting off of the one flat part of the highest chimney level, between the two nests. Anyone had any luck getting up there?
(Is the ruined submarine at the entrance to this part of the veil anything more than scenery?)
It looks like there's a fish form passage just above the bottom level in the chimney, on the upper left corner of that T intersection for the bottom level. But that wouldn't make any (useful) sense, so it probably isn't.
Update: You can briar-boost from the top (third) level of the chimney to the left side of the Sun Temple exit; it follows that you should be able to do the same in the other direction, and thus reach the middle (second) chimney level. Applying this theory has proved difficult. More results to follow.

Very thorough post Zeke - thanks for the guidance! I'll refer to your post when I'm done struggling in vain for a few hours. ::) :D
-
You should record your attempts and put them up on youtube. :) I'd like to see it accomplished with that briar jump you mentioned if it's possible. :)
-
I spent agaes trying to briar jump up to those two birds and then did the jump across to the temple, but so far I have found it impossible to do the return jump because the temple is a bit lower than the ledges :(
I got to the nest above the turtle caves by very carefully angling my jump after the usual soup but I can't be bothered trying it again, I just wanted to try it just that once :)
-

I'll post a Youtube video if I'm successful, but that in turn will depend on whether or not I can do it twice (making the jump then wondering how on earth I managed to do it.) :)
-
lol.... Hall of Fame jump!
-
The Aquarian Olympics have begun! ;D
-
Oh it's ON. I'm going to try and make that jump now... Either that or find another way in >_>
-
AHAHAHAHH! I MADE IT! I MADE IT FIRST GO! ^-^
Aaaaand then I accidentally jumped into a Rukh and fell out. Oh well, I think I can do that again... *fingers crossed*
-
Good work man! I hope the ordeal doesn't become one of those "I did it the first time but can never do it again" scenarios. :o :) Good luck any way. ;D
-
"I did it the first time but can never do it again"
I think it is :'(
The first time, I did it with a Briar Boost from just above the monkey tree on the left hand side... it was perfect, I got so much air. Now I just can't seem to replicate it. I wonder what I'm doing wrong.
Now it's just a race against time to see who gets a video first ;D
-
Ohoho! The battle has begun ... and I have every intention to win. ;D
-
lol, uh oh,.... what have I started???
-
AHAHAHAHH! I MADE IT! I MADE IT FIRST GO! ^-^
Aaaaand then I accidentally jumped into a Rukh and fell out. Oh well, I think I can do that again... *fingers crossed*
Are they real then? I just got the impression that they were a part of the scenery when I spotted them :o
-
They are real. If you dual form scream near them, you're close enough to get one to screech and start flying up. If you could switch forms while wall clinging, you could probably get it to drop an egg by screaming at it enough, even though you wouldn't be able to get it.
I was pleased to discover that parrots explode:
(http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/1965/parrotul0.th.png) (http://img156.imageshack.us/my.php?image=parrotul0.png)
Also, Fenizrael, where exactly near the monkeys are you jumping from? Arrows would be helpful.
(http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/3217/monkeyxm2.th.png) (http://img253.imageshack.us/my.php?image=monkeyxm2.png)
-
Oh yes thos parrots do explode I've shot one mid jump lol
-
The one (and only) time I made the jump, I made it from where I've got circled at the moment. I remember because I took the long way through the Sun Temple, up to the bubble where the lost memory is, then I jumped down and out of it and jumped closer towards the cliff and almost freaked out because I came close to flying off the edge and into the water. Then I said to myself "Well, this is about as close as I'm going to get" and so I briar boosted.
I've tried it countless times since (I still want to win this competition) and I just haven't been able to get the same launch speed or angle as before. Maybe it's the exact point I'm launching from, maybe it's where I'm firing the briar seed at... I'm not sure :'(
(http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/8984/monkeyjumpnw8.jpg)
-
I find it hard to do a briar jump even and the angle is very tricky to get right any way but keep trying when you are in the mood for it :) It's a heck of a trip getting to that spot how ever you do it and one failure is very off-putting :-\
-
I was able to get a fair bit done by briar rocketing, not as much as another member who's screenshot links are all broken now ( see top of the thread link below ) and managed to take a fun parrot hunting video as well >:D
http://www.bit-blot.com/forum/index.php?topic=951.msg10929#msg10929
congratulations on making it to that ledge even if it was just for a brief instance!
-
I'm going to keep trying make the return jump, it failed yesterday but I don't give in too easy if I know it's remotely possible :D
-
So uhm, on the semi related subject of briar jumping. All I managed was to give myself a silly boost (I could have jumped normally as well). Is there anything special you need to do when briar jumping?
-
You have to fire directly down, in such a way that the briar grows perpendicular to Naija. It is hellishly difficult to do on rock, and I've only done it on the flat dry parts of the Sun Temple.
-
Hmm, I remember the way I got the spiked costume. Nature climbed as high as I could and accidentally grew a briar straight into me. I was very lucky to have made it, I couldn't believe what just happened.
But doing that trick on purpose has never worked out... :(
-
It's happened sometimes when I jump off a briar after jumping onto it, but it happens almost randomly.
-
It's kind of tricky, but not too bad once you get the hang of it. Three things need to come together to make it work well.
The pillar should be placed directly below the center of Naija's torso, or it will just nudge your foot or head and give you a lame little hop. Having the pillar centered will propel her the most evenly and farthest.
Since Naija tends to cling to rocks parallel to their surface, try to place the pillar to come out perpendicular to the surface of the rock. This way it will line up with your trajectory for the early semi-linear bit, pushing you for all of its growth instead of for only a little bit.
As a result of this, the feat works best when you're clinging to rocks that will give an optimal trajectory. Try to find rocks at a 45 or even 30-ish degree angle to the horizontal for maximum distance.
The guy that inkblob mentions seems to do it in a different way that I can't quite grasp. It seems trickier. ??? Also, still no success getting over there; screenshot(s) if I do.
-
Thank you Zeke that is a great help :D I alread knew to fire roughly below her but having an idea of exactly where to aim her shot will make each attempt a bit less random :)
-
Thanks, Zeke.
Also, I think this qualifies as my 'master nature climbing trial':
(http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/1061/ohgodni6.th.png) (http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/1061/ohgodni6.png)
The only thing that prevents me from doing it with ease is randomly jumping in the wrong direction, or with much greater force then she usually does and flying straight into a growing briar. (I shoot the seed and then quickly jump afterwards in really steep areas)
-
Forget Briar Jumping, just build your own rockets, Aquaria Style.
(http://www.niftyhat.com/posted_stuff/AquariaRocket.png)
In order to build your own Aquaria Rocket (TM) you will need:
- A rock.
- Nature Form.
- The Bind Song.
- A good ledge to launch from.
- Fairly good knowledge of the shortcut keys.
First, find your rock and drop in on the ground close to where you want to launch from. I used the spot right above the Li's Cave in Veil. Switch to nature form (4)and put a briar on the rock in the direction in which you wish your rocket to travel. Next is the trick bit (and why you need shortcut keys) switch back to normal form (1) and bind the rock (0), then back to nature form (4) before the briar you just planted stabs you to death. Since the distance your rocket can travel is limited by the lifespan of the briar you must quickly move to the surface of the water and jump in a matter than will make Najia cling to the briar (not the rock). The higher and further from the rock itself you can place her, the faster your rocket will travel.
One last point, you can place as many Briars as you want on the rock trying to get your aim right, only the one you cling on to will set the trajectory at which the rocket fires, it should also give you and idea of how long you have until the time expires on your rocket as each on dissipates mid flight. As of yet I can't find a way to latch another Brair in mid flight and keep everything in the air forever since you can't do it on an object that is bound. It's pretty tricky to set if you aren't underwater, let alone flying through the sky and a silly speed.
Yes, I know it's a physics bug (bind doesn't account for the Briar when calculating the force with which it pulls towards you, and thus gets stuck always moving toward you but never reaching), but it's a great deal of fun messing with. I spent about 20 minutes aiming one of these things to try and jump the rock between East and West veil. When I succeeded bad things happened i.e. I fell down the side of the map and couldn't get back again. I don't have a screeny of the map but I do have a picture of my deliciously phallic rocket . I love the way the bind effect looks kind of like and rocket flame trailing behind it.
-
D=
I'm so going to try that right now.
2nd attempt: This works perfect and is quite reliable. Thanks a bunch for sharing!
3rd attempt: This IS practically flying. Forget about 'quite' reliable. This will work. Always.
-
:o Wow! that is so cool titch, I am certainly going to have a try at that nice little trick :D But I am just wondering what Alec andDerek will say, not forgetting chibi, DM, Xiagan and the rest are going to say.
You do realise that people who might not of played it for months will now be diving back in if only to try this :o
This is the amount of jumping that I have done so far but I guess with the 'rocket' ::) this area is going to be all white soon lol
Bah Image shack isn't playing ball right now I'll add it as soon as I can..
-
Oh wow! You built a perpetuum mobile! Awesome! :D
Most amazing bug/glitch ever heard of! ;)

err...
Be careful, don't try to go to the upper left corner of this area... There is no transition to the area on the right :(
EDIT: Now I read his post again, I see he already found out D:
Damn, I was so excited I stopped reading half way trough.

Also if you create a briar on a rock, and this briar is sticking above the water, you can simple change to normal and bind while hanging on it. (You'll take some damage though).
I would imagine that it was a bit awkward, did you have any problems quiting the game after jumping of the map?
And Finally Imageshack has decided to play ball :o this is my map of that area of the veil, and so far I jumped across to the temple and she bounce right of it and onto the big boss shark, he was not amused lol Talking of him, he followed Naija right down and I lost him when I went back into the tunnel but when I missed the jump back the temple I found him inside the entrance :o I almost swam down his throat :o lol

Nope, just quit and continue works perfect.
Also, may I ask where you found the rock in that area? I can't seem to find one >.<

Well I hope Derek and Alec don't get mad at me for abusing bugs, but if you've tried it you'll know it's too fun to not share. ^-^
I don't know about the whole time thing. I downloaded Aquaria for Christmas in the steam sale. I only finished the Sun Temple today. I actually discovered the glitch while trying to Briar jump to the top of the temple because I couldn't work the crystal puzzle out. I got it later on though. After getting through the Sun Temple later, I worked out that I could have probably jumped over it using a rocket, or at least to the top, and then dropped down into the section of Veil in the middle and got in that way.
If you can't find a rock in the area you want to jump from, find one in another and rocket it over to where you want. I don't think there is a map in Veil that doesn't have a rock in it somewhere you can use like this. The same rocket effect does work underwater, but the speed is substantially reduced, taking away some of the fun. You can stick a bunch of briars on one rock and use it moringstar style too, although it's a little unwieldy, it is good fun.

k, done reading the forum. must play game. great.. no... GREATEST find :D
*edit: amazing effects so far! I must recommend switching forms whilst up there as well ;) a certain form gives you a crazy turbo boost, it will jolt you right off the rocket and you might have to do a bit of searching for it after. I can't find that boulder you used in the east Veil tho silver? searched the crab/starfish area and was using the the bind like a pulse as I went along the bottom to see if anything stuck lol you said you landed on the shark, did you find the rock in the middle section?

Awesome! No! Rad! :D
One wonders if there is other, yet undiscovered, stuff in the game you left there because it's awesome. :)

Thanks, however I just noticed the spelling and grammar errors :/
Anyway, it should be possible to use the same technique to jump up the upper cliff as well, that's about as high as this glitch will get you.

Sorry for leading you all on a wild goose chase and I could of sworn that I saw one there but it's on the other side, I really don't see how we can get a boulder onto the temple for this jump worse luck, :( Once I got through into the other side where the first big tutrtle is I tried the rocket and wow!I thought that I was going of screen there for a while lol :o
Chibi I have already tried that and if you look at my screenshot you will see the results, I got up so far and missed the ledge :'(
-
And there isn't a rock on the other side of the Temple either so that's out unless we can send one over the top of the rock separating one area from the other which I doubt :'(
-
Hahaha. Penis rocket. Friggin' awesome!
Since the fish form is not constrained to fall straight down when in the air, and behaves more like a Newtonian projectile, you can launch off from your penis rocket just before it wilts. The übervine hurts fish form, and sends you caroming off in the opposite direction. V. fun. See that nice parabola on the map there? Like that.

And, Cryzbl you son-of-a-gun. Now I need to go hone my vine-wall-jumping skills to get up there, since they are currently nil. Well done, though!
Alec, is there maybe an easier way to get up there than how Cryzbl did it? A hidden rock in that section, perhaps, or something else we haven't tried?
-
Be very careful that you don't land on dry land while in fish form though - it's impossible to change forms and the fish form can't cling to walls and jump off them, leading to the classic fish out of water scenario. Neat idea though - never would of thought of it.

That is very true chibi, but perhaps if you time it right then you can change form while falling and before hitting the ground?
-
Of course - I was just warning people not to stay in fish form for the entire voyage. :)

Good warning Chibi, but I was just adding that little extra bit of advice for them :D

Good thinking, Silver. ;)

Ok Robin....... And stop calling me Batman! ::)

Ok guys, it's hint time. I'm missing one treasure, but I don't want to be told right out where it is. Just sort of... the general area in which it will be found. It's the one between the seed bag and the Mithala doll.
Also, is there any way to kill the following:
-Predatory Turnicates (glowy blue translucent thingies in the Abyss that eat you).
-Those stupid spiky things in the Kelp Forest that sit there and follow you around when you sing different notes.
-The big fish-eel things in the Kelp Forest that lunge out of caves and eat you and spit you out, and usually have dark caverns behind them (containing healing leeches, black pearl, et cetera).
And is there anything to the ruined shipwreck area in the Kelp Forest near a maul on one side and behind some Fish Form passages on the other? There's a bunch of Li insignia boxes lying around, but I can't remember if anything important happened there.
-
I can't answer your first question because I'm not playing Aquaria [see shipwreck question], but as for the next ones:
Turnicate Question: they can be killed with nature form's charged shot (briers)
Spiky Question: I'm afraid they're immortal. :) Otherwise, the puzzle of singing would be ruined.
Wolf Fish (fish-eels) Question: They're immortal as well, though you can slip past them quickly with the fish form.
Shipwreck Question: bump against the walls in the shipwreck until you find a hidden passage - although you can't see in that area, travel as far as you can - there's a treasure there, possibly the one you seek.
Good luck! :)
-
Are you sure the PT is killable, Chibi?
Zeke: The treasure you are looking for is well hidden in the Kelp Forest (not the shipwreck area). You have to kill something big and look for hidden tunnels to get it. :)
-
Are you sure the PT is killable, Chibi?
I was able to kill the PT with briers in 1.1.1.

And go down in the Kelp forest if it's the prize that I am thinking of?
-
It was the walker baby, and I got it. Thanks all!
-
Yes that is the one I thought you both meant :D I keep a copy of the map in my head but not one of the the prize slots ::)
-
I was using the P..... rocket last night and something even weirder happened, my rock took of and left the spine behind stuck in place as if the rock was still under it :o And all this because I tried to kill those bigmouths with them>:( and that was weird also? I shot the briar at it's base and it tried to eat it so the briar ended up sticking up from inside it's mouth and then Aquaria crashed :o Next time I opened Aquaria I started to get this strange floating briar bug :o
Sorry no pictures the screen capture buttons don't work for me and I hadn't got photoshop open ready to use :( But if it happens again tonight I will get some screenshots for you. I had better also post a bug report for Alec if it happens again ::)
-
I've had the floating Briar bug. Originally I thought it might be an attempt at a fix the the p**** rocket bug, but based on what Alec said I'm not sure any more.
I've got a yearning to make a rocketry/brairnaughting assault course.

Could be interesting titch lol

I was under the impression that Wolf Fish were killable... just get behind them then use energy shot heaps. I'd have to go back and double check it though.
-
My shots just go straight through the wolf fish? You are talking about those big ugly ones that are in caves in the Kelp forest not those in the Abyss?
-
I think he's talking about a fish other than the wolf fish in the Kelp Forest - I just checked, and the fish are definitely invincible.
-
Yes those fish are just impossible to kill and inflict some nasty damage on you, so he must mean those down below?
-
There's three kind of fish: the lamp-fish in the abyss, which you can kill. Then there's two kinds (or maybe three) of cave/crevasse-lurking fish, one of which is the wolf fish and is invincible, and one of which is very similar looking and acting, but can be killed. Edit after I find the name of it.
-

Is this the one with really large jaws and in the caves with loads of bones and the dead king??
-
Maybe? It's in the chomper folder in the gfx directory. I suppose it does look more like the anglerfish than the wolf fish; oh well.

I don't know what they are called but for a change these can be killed, and there are also 2 in the dark area where most of those black leaches are.

Hallo again all. My game functionality questions go here, and here's another:
Is there a way to tell from the .lua files for the three attacking familiars which one doles out the most damage the fastest? I know the piranha has the added benefit of adding to your Beast Form cache, but in terms of straight-up attacking power, I can't tell which is the best. I also can't interpret the info from the .lua files, either. ??? Something to do with lunge delay, shot power, something-or-other?
-
Well, let's first look at the Blaster Pet...
Damage = 1 the damage, obviously.
|
lungeDelay = 1.0 said in the first piece of code.
|
lungeDelay = lungeDelay - dt * (getPetPower()+1) the lunge delay, which is propably how long it waits before attacking,
weird it's 3 here and 1.0 in the first piece of code
if lungeDelay < 0 then I have no clue what dt or getPower is...
fireDelay = fireDelay - dt * (getPetPower()+1)
if fireDelay < 0 then
if ent ~= 0 and ent ~= n then
s = createShot("PetBlasterFire", me, ent, entity_x(me), entity_y(me))
tx, ty = entity_getTargetPoint(ent, 0)
vx = tx - entity_x(me)
vy = ty - entity_y(me)
shot_setAimVector(s, vx, vy)
end
shotsFired = shotsFired + 1
fireDelay = 0.2 here it's obvious what fireDelay is, it's 0.2, which,
end in total, makes 0.6, seeing he fires 3 shots.
if shotsFired >= 3 then
lungeDelay = 3 here it's shown that lunge delay is 3,
fireDelay = 0 but I have no clue what it eventually becomes in the piece of code above.
shotsFired = 0
end
end
The pet Dumbo...
Fairly easy, no damage at all. ^^
The Pet Nautilus...
Damage = 1
|
lungeDelay = 1.0 said in the first piece of code.
|
lungeDelay = lungeDelay - (dt * (getPetPower()+1))
if lungeDelay < 0 then
lungeDelay = 3 and here it's also 3, just like the blaster pet.
ent = entity_getNearestEntity(me, "", 512, ET_ENEMY, DT_AVATAR_PET)
if ent~=0 and not entity_isDamageTarget(ent, DT_AVATAR_PETNAUTILUS) then
ent = 0
end
if ent ~= 0 then
--debugLog(string.format("pet setting target: %s", entity_getName(ent)))
entity_setTarget(me, ent)
entity_setState(me, STATE_ATTACKPREP, 0.5)
end
end
This... sort of shows that the blaster pet is a bit better, cause he fires 3 shots, and they all do 1 damage. But, those shots might miss every now and then.
And finally the Piranha...
Damage = 0.75
|
lungeDelay = 1.0 again the 1.0, propably just a starter, so the thing can attack right away when equipped.
| would it be possible to kill faster if you kept changing the pets? I don't know. Nor do I ever want to go through the trouble.
spd = 0.6
|
if dist < 16 then
shotDrop = shotDrop - dt
if shotDrop < 0 then
createShot("PetPiranha", me, 0, entity_x(me), entity_y(me))
shotDrop = 0.3
spd = 0.4
end
end
In this last piece of code it's rather unclear what exactly happens. Though the spd, which is obviously speed, I hope, I think that that would be the delays between the bites when he's already attacking.
So, conclusion... You better just shoot yourself, they are not that helpful, but in statistics... Blaster pet does 1 damage per shot, nautilus does 1 damage per hit, piranha does 0.75 damage per bite, if you would time how much they hit in so many seconds, I bet you could figure out, I'm tired of looking at too much code now. @_@
Oh... and excuse me for the long post, I hope I at least answered a bit of your question.
-
Hmm. Based on all that, it looks like the Blaster has the maximum damage total, at 3 if all shots hit, followed by the Piranha at 2.25 if all three bites connect, and the Nautilus weighing in at 1. Since they all have the same lunge delay, there's no advantages there. Also, the getPetPower bit of code refers to the Leadership Roll, which grants the status PetPower to Naija, in the ingredientdescriptions.txt and ingredients.txt files in the data folder. This, I think, decreases the lunge delay by one, increases either damage or number of shots/bites by one, and in the case of the Dumbo Octopus increases its lighting heresabouts:
glow = createQuad("Naija/LightFormGlow", 13)
quad_scale(glow, 5 + (getPetPower()*8), 5 + (getPetPower()*8))
However, considering the damage Naija can mete out, the other advantages the familiars provide is probably the greater factor in terms of total usefulness, the light-providing from the Dumbo Octopus and the Beast Shot acquisition from the Piranha. Incidentally, that's probably what that last bit of code was about (I think).

Hi all! ;D First post here.
dt is the elapsed time in second since the last call of the function (event). I imagine it's an abbrevation for "delta time", or time difference between frames. The pattern you see,
fire = fire - dt * (getPetPower() + 1)
if (fire < 0) ...
fire = 3
is a method of triggering the fire event at a consistent rate. It reduces the variable by (dt) each frame, which, again is the delay in seconds since the last update. getPetPower() defaults to 0 (no pet powerup), so the normal rate is that fireDelay decreases by (0 + 1) per second. In case the pet is buffed, the reduction will be multiplied by the power-up level. So a +1 pet will attack twice as often (removing 2 from fireDelay per second) and a theoretical +2 pet will attack thrice as fast et cetera.
The variable "lungeDelay" is the rate, in seconds, between target acquisions for the pet. Lunge (http://www.martinjdougherty.co.uk/mjdimg/fence2.jpg) is a fencing manoeuvre, that of thrusting your blade forward while bending one leg and extending the other. Errol Flynn, ho! :D The differing values between initialization (top of file) and game loop is not important. The init value will only be used once (per summoning of pet? Per game? Unsure, this depend upon how Alec has implemented the lua script engine. I'm guessing every summon, to keep script bloat down.)
So in other words, it's the maximum time it takes for the pet to go from passive to aggressive. I say maximum, because the way the pets are coded, an enemy could come within sight when there is only a split second left of the lungeDelay cycle, so it will react almost immediately. In practiality the pet can react in anything between 0.01 seconds and the full duration of lungeDelay.
--
Truth is, because of this lungeDelay, the pets' individual attack speeds are almost insignificant.
Looking at the different pets from a technical standpoint, it's very hard to draw any solid conclusions of which pet is better. The actual damage values seem to be hidden inside the game code, as specific kinds of "shots" that are created to emulate the attacks. I couldn't find the values Alpha mentions, but I will assume these are correct for now. ;)
For example, the Nautilus pet is the only (well, in theory, unless they're stacked on top of eachother in which case the piranha would also) one that can damage multiple enemies with its charging attack. On the other hand, the Blaster pet will deliver a more sustained and focused damage. Then again, the piranha is the only one that will heal you by devouring your enemies.
However. The piranha is the only offensive pet that does not reset its lungeDelay after a successful series of attacks. Unlike the others, it does not wait 3 seconds between each attack cycle. It's also the only pet that by design will pursue the same target until either Naija or the enemy is dead. In my opinion, along with the heals received from it eating the enemies, makes it the by far most efficient damage pet to have. The Blaster, by comparison, while doing more damage per attack, has a large chance of swapping target, altogether missing with its projectiles and does not contribute with any synergetic effects like heals. Not surprisingly, the Nautilus does rank lowest, considering its very situational attack (a straight line) and low damage per hit, along with the high lungeDelay.
Words, words! :D Not sure what came out of that, but I think I made up my own mind on pets atleast.
- T
Edit:
Wanted to make a little clarification on the "not changing targets" clause for the piranha;
It does, in theory, change target, but seeing how it's a "melee" pet, it will remain very close to the original target and reacquire the same enemy every lunge cycle. Unless it's a very fast enemy. :(
-
Hey, welcome to BitBlot!
The piranha, however, will stop targeting something when it goes out of it's range, and since the game involves a lot of swimming away from your enemies so they don't kill you, this could happen very often. Or with lunging enemies, which are at times too fast to follow. I've had my piranha uselessly swim around me in trying to get at the nearest enemy while everyone else was ripping me to shreds. Blaster shots don't do that. Although that may be just because I prefer the blaster peg. I think the functionality of a pet depends on the enemy.
-
Whoah, that bring some clarification to dt and the pets!
The values of the damage they give is what I found in data/shots there are a few files like petblasterfire.txt, petnautilus.txt and petpiranha.txt
Honestly, if you think your pet is weak, just upgrade their attack by changing these files.
In fact, if I looked correct, you could upgrade Naija's Energy attack... but that would be like cheating. D:
Oh and Zoko, I don't swim away, I always kill. :3
-
No problem ;)
I eventually found my way into the data directory, it's fairly clearly stated there, I agree. :D Currently I'm mucking about with making pets react to singing... I'll get back to you when I got some solid progress (they are reacting, just not sure what I'm to do with it.)
-
Different pets suit different enemies; I believe piranha can significantly slow down its target, but it takes longer to actually kill anything than nautilus.
-
thanks for shedding some clarity on pet behaviour Tarami! you pose a strong case for the Piranha
-
Oh and Zoko, I don't swim away, I always kill. :3
But you have to still keep moving around, don't you? You're not just gonna stand (well, float) there spamming fireballs. Maybe it's just me, but when confronted with a horde of enemies, I tend to swim away from them in one direction, then dodge in another when they shoot and/or lunge at me. All while spamming fireballs, of course ;)
-
Actually, I simply swim TOWARDS them, when swimming right, it works perfectly, then I turn around and do it again. It works better than swimming away, hoping some of your shots turn around and hit something.
-
I swim towards them also, and around them lol
The little egg shaped ones I gather by swimming close to the nest away and around again until I have at least 6 following me and then I spam them, they are just so predictable that it can be like shooting fish in a barrel lol
-
I swim away from them when they're already chasing me, although if one catches up, I thrust in a 90 degree direction to the one I was going and attempt to kill the by direct fire.
