hah I was just going to post this, the link is in my clipboard 4 reals. what's with the elbows huh?
-
Squids should not have elbows. :'(
-
That is so cool. The elbow squid has just won the Weird Underwater Creatures Thread.
Squids should not have elbows. :'(
(It's ok Derek: evolution happens) ;D Just view it as another monstrosity spawned by the Creator.
-
They found this thing at an oil drilling site, maybe there was something with the oil that had an effect on the squids growth or evolution. It seems to use its elephant ear shaped crown as a mode of propulsion, and the elbows seem to be made by an asterisk-shaped formation of bones, very cool indeed. To wonderland!
For the people who didnt get that: Wonderland is another name for area 51, im just a fountain of knowledge, arent i?
-
I second what Derek said.
-
I found it fascinating and strange but I can see how it could evolve quite naturally. There is a niche for creatures that can 'fish' in the deep dark of the ocean and if it can't see so well down there then letting it's arms droop to catch food is only the next step from chasing it. The elbows would just happen...
Of course none of this detracts from the fact that it is an amazing sight to see, just like Hammer Head sharks and Narwales :D
-
Yes, NarWales' climate is very agreeable this time of year. ;D
Unfortunately Derek, nature has no sense of aesthetic whatsoever. :( Beauty happens when natural function coincides with human ideals.

Should i explain the Uncanny Valley?

Hence the "Catch it Silver?" footnote next to the smiley. Ha! I laugh in your general direction. ;D

That video is spot on, heres a funnier one, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKTAJBQSm10
My definintion of the uncanny valley:
If an object is not human but given human characteristics (Asimo, Wall-e) it appeals to us, mainly because the concept of Wall-e being humanoid, but not human gives us a visual of him being "cute", the cute factor in human visualization is based mainly if it is likely to harm us. Start to add human characteristics, and you fall into the uncanny valley, because, as it begins to look human, our brain starts to think that we as humans are more perfect than these things, and we feel threatened, (Terminator, I-Robot). If the object is indistinguishable from a human, (Final Fantasy: Advent Children, Altair) then we accept it as one of us, and it appeals to us.

Chibi you wouldn't survive 5 minutes in The Vipers forum, not unless you have a cast iron second skin :o
Sometimes I just don't feel like biting sorry :-*
Chimerra I am with you all the way :D I have been an inveterate people watcher since I watched the BBC series about the subject about 40 years ago and I have a smattering of psycology knowlege so I know how hidden signals affect peoples reactions toother humans and creatures :0
We could start a board on this subject alone and bore everyone else to tears lol

Haha so true. XD
Just jumped at the chance to use a Monty Python line.
We could start a board on this subject alone and bore everyone else to tears lol
I believe there would be a demand for such a board: it's an intriguing subject, and growing increasingly important.

(Here's a great video on the uncanny valley [a cartoon lecture])
Did i not just post that video in my latest post?
-
That was a neat cartoon and I see the problems that the games industry has. The other side of the valley? I think that a scfi writter has already been there when he invented the robots first rule in one of his books, if a robot/game/film character looks human and acts human then there might possibly be real Trouble!
ie 'Blade Runner' .......

You will have to excuse him, I am sure that Chibi was sent to show me that I am not really that dumb after all lol ::)

Haha - sorry remembered the video and thought I had found it on my own. I'll delete that section of the post. ::) Save me from myself again!

I saw the post in my Comic-Art class.
