Miniboss help...? (some spoilers)

So I'm in the hidden area next to the kelp forest, which you get to by turtle, and there's a creature with nine eyes that I guess is a miniboss. But, I can't get it to do anything. Occasionally its central eye changes color and the room shakes but nothing else happens. What am I supposed to do? I've gotten every form north of the abyss.

Right, well, the central eye just looks at me, and its colors don't exactly match with the note colors. *goes to look at outer eyes*

All right, I got it... despite it going ballistic on me for no reason half of the time, and forgetting the other half.

It fails you if you're too slow, even if you got all the notes right. This made it very frustrating for me, as singing with a joypad is inaccurate, and singing with a mouse is slow

It took me a while until I got a song with notes that were semi-cooperative.  The time limit seems quite short when you hit the seven note mark - it's hard to rush though, else you'll accidentally hit a different note. 

What helped me a bit - if you hold control, it'll bring up the song interface without holding the right mouse button down.  At least, it helped me be a little more accurate with it. 

Then, I tried to do it a second time, I got it a bit quicker that time, just to see if there was anything else.  I was awarding with...  a small eye.  Wow.

It seems it just tosses out random common foods.
