You have to be near the gear and NOT attached to it. Then spin/rotate (left mouse button + R or + rotating mouse movement).

Thie prolly makes me an idiot but whatever. So I spin the gear and raise the water level in the sun temple, then there's nowhere to go, all passages that become available to me are dead ends, where should I go?

Noticed anything uncommon in the upper North-East-corner? Maybe something that can be filled with light to go to places where no light is?

That stuck me for a while as well. Don't feel bad. But in all fairness, there is a little explanation when you near the gear about how to spin. That's kind of a tip off.
