Aiming with gamepad in beast form broken
« on: December 15, 2007, 04:16:41 am »
I'm using an xbox 360 gamepad to play Aquaria and when in beast form I can't aim with the right stick. It works in the energy form but in beast form I can only fire in the direction that I'm moving and if I'm stationary the projectiles just appear on my face and don't move. Aiming works properly with the mouse so I'm assuming its a gamepad issue.

In case its relevant, I've tried it both in windows and in linux through wine, exact same problem both times.

Edit:
I've also noticed that if I try to use something (usually a save point) I end up firing off a shot too.

I'll take a crack at tweaking this tomorrow. :)

Also I just noticed (as I just got the form) that in the sun form you can't direct the beam with the aiming stick. This is probably the same issue.

Actually, it isn't.  The beam faces forward at all times regardless of control method.  It's like a headlight (quite literally).

Except when stationary you can use the mouse to direct the beam and look at things. With the gamepad you can't.

I stand corrected, then.  I should have realized that.

This doesn't appear to have been fixed in 1.0.3. I had hoped this would be an easy fix  :-[

I want to fix a bunch of gamepad things at once.

This is happening to me as well, only I'm not using the gamepad. I'm swimming with a mouse/keyboard combo (that way, you can fire backwards while you're swimming). Hope you'll fix it soon, it limits the beast form's usefullness.

I'm just posting to confirm that this problem not only still exists, but that it's not a gamepad issue, it's a Beast Form issue entirely. I use mouse/keyboard, and I get the same exact thing.

I have to be moving forward to fire while in Beast Form.
Energy works fine.
Hell, when I ate my first creature that gave me the ability to shoot, I could've sworn it worked fine. But a couple minutes in and it suddenly is broken, and reloading the save and restarting the game didn't fix it.

This needs to be fixedd, it's kind of annoying that I /have/ to move to shoot.

Actually... I think I've figured out why entirely...

For some reason Beast form only spits the direction you're moving. Even if you try to aim a different direction you'll only shoot forward.

This really sucks for people that use mouse/keyboard because the main reason we like mouse/keyboard is the ability to move one way and shoot the other.

C'mon, guys! You can do eet!~

I'm having the same problem. Beast form shots just appear on your face if you don't use the mouse to aim.

Hmm 2 years and this still hasn't been fixed....waddup that?

Manually edit and compile the source code yourself? That's always a solution.

I don't really know for certain, but I'd speculate the reason it hasn't been fixed is that it's not a bug, nor broken. It's the intended functionality for beast shot.

Warning: Extremely minor SPOILERS are in the next two paragraphs.

If you're swimming in a direction, beast shot fires in that direction. If you stand still, most shots sit in front of your face like a mine. I don't think all of them do that, either, if I'm remembering how it works if you eat a pistol-shrimp and fire while standing still. (Could be wrong, on that, I've only munched a pistol-shrimp a couple times, and I'm always kind of surprised when it fires) Also, IIRC, the way the firing and targeting works is different depending on whether you're free-floating in the water or clinging to a wall. Shooting while swimming makes the shot go the direction you're swimming, but shooting while wall-hugging makes the shot go towards your cursor. Sometimes, on complicated curvy walls the game doesn't quite handle that right either though, such as dropping the shot on your face like a mine because a spur of rock obstructs your line-of-sight to the cursor. That could be a bug, but again it might be the way it was intentionally designed.  Play around with it more, and you'll get a stronger understanding of the limitations.

As I said, I believe those limitations are intentional. The main shooty form in the game is energy form, which targets very well. Beast shot seems mainly designed so that you have a back-up blasting ability for areas where you need to be in the fastest current-resisting form. Like they didn't want to completely disable shooting for areas with rapid currents, but they also didn't want to duplicate or overshadow energy form. In that regards, Beast Shot is a compromise. It may also be viewed as the higher-skill option, because you have to control the aiming yourself, and manage your ammo, plus when it does connect it's usually for more damage.

Just a thought. Idle speculation on my part, really. Until I read this thread, I never even considered that it might be a bug or considered broken. I just assumed this was part of how they distinguish beast form and energy form mechanically.
