No Aquaria iPad source release for now?
« on: September 27, 2012, 01:54:27 am »
I'd like to see Aquaria on more devices. Being the 3D noob I am, I have little idea on how to convert standard OpenGL into GLES. Therefore I thought I might try getting the iPad source and see if I can do some modifications to get that working. I've emailed Andrew Church, but he replied that the source was not in his control and is the property of Bit-Blot. Tried emailing Alec, but he didn't respond (maybe I used the wrong address). So that sort of sucks. And because the code is derived from the pre-open-source version, there seems little chance we can force the source out by citing GPL terms. Oh well, it'll probably be back to trying to somehow convert GL to GLES calls and not breaking things in the process, and having a completely different control scheme compared to the iPad version (I don't know anyone with an iPad and Aquaria, and it's not as if you can walk into an Apple Store and install a copy, since there's no demo and I'm not paying for something I don't have a device to run on).

Might I mention it's almost going to be a year since the iPad version was released. Maybe there's some sort of agreement with the publisher to withhold source? Just guessing.

Confirmed, Andrew told me the same thing as a side note in an email.

I've been constantly nagging Alec about the source code when he was on IRC; to me it seems he isn't sure what Derek would say about it, therefore nothing moves.
(Reminds me of the dining philosophers ? :P)
I've tried to find the exact thing in my IRC logs but no success so far.

You could try linking against regal, which does this sort of GL<->GLES encapsulation for you. But the cost would be too high, I doubt it'd run smoothly - far from it. I learned a tiny bit more about engine design in the meantime; BBGE is nice, flexible and all that, but really slow (more info). So you'd end up with low frame rates, *if* it runs.

I'd like to see Aquaria on more devices.

Agreed. With the GLES code out, i'd love to give it a try getting this to run on a Raspberry Pi.  :D

I've heard rumors about an OUYA release, too. That'd be cool.

Indeed, maybe it also could be released to Android, even if it's only for the tegra3 based tablets (ie, same specs as OUYA). It'd be yet another reason to buy a Nexus 7. :)
