Can someone help me out with some basic node creation?
« on: July 09, 2012, 09:45:52 pm »
Okay, in short, all I'm trying to do is edit the Beauty of Aquaria mod and add in nodes around the map at various locations so that Naija can sit and relax, or sleep, or whatever, for the purposes of manipulating screenshots and such.

But I'm awful at this, I can't figure out how to do it. The mod already has a "sit" and "sleep" .lua in scripts and the guides I've found say that needs to be there, but how to actually spawn that specific node I can't figure out.

I know that ctrl-space spawns a node, and I've tried that, but it just spawned a black dot I couldn't seem to do anything with. And then pressing f7 to enter "node edit" mode that made a bunch of boxes appear and didn't seem to actually let me do anything to that node anymore.

I'm horribly messing up something and I figure someone has to know how to do this in a simple way.

I'm not trying to add in any new graphics to the map or anything, I just want to change how I can interact with some of the scenery.

Mkaaaay, basic node tutorial follows:

First, you want to do something with nodes, so press F7.
In that mode, press Ctrl+Space to drop a node.
Then mouseover that node and press N to enter text, in your case, "sit" or "sleep".
Save and reload, and the node should work.
Optionally resize node with shift+rightclick.

EDIT: what you did was spawn a black tile in tile edit mode (F5), not a node.

EDIT2: For cool screenshots you'll probably want to add some "zoom" nodes around the place, and maybe particle effects ("pe" nodes).

Oh thank you so much for the help. It works as you said.

A few more questions though - on zoom, is it possible to make it zoom in when you're interacting, like sitting? It always zooms out, I get the feeling that might be hardcoded into the game though.

Also, messing around with sit nodes, I grounded myself in the ground, and can't jump out. Of course, I can just reload and such, but is there a way to use the editor to place Naija somewhere else - not talking about changing her start position, just where I'm currently at?

the zoom node takes parameters: "zoom <level> <speed>", so you'd use "zoom 1.2 3" for a slow close-up.

Zoom on interaction requires scripting; you could copy the sit.lua script and make a sit2.lua that calls overrideZoom(1.2, 2) to zoom in and later overrideZoom(0) to return back to normal.
[EDIT: fixed typo, I meant sit.lua, not zoom.lua]

To place naija, point anywhere with the mouse and press "P" - easy as that.

Btw, do you plan to get more into the editor or is that a one-time thing now? ;)

Nah, I'm not that creative or artistic, so I don't plan on making my own mods or anything. Just wanted some basic knowledge for tweaking the BoA mod to get the most out of it.

And wow this works perfectly, thank you. I see the zoom nodes even override how sitting would normally zoom out, too, so that answers my earlier question. You've been a lot of help, thank you for bothering and being detailed and all.

Aw, too bad. I still wish someone else would make mods nowadays. :P
Then you could at least give more comments on other mods, like, labyrinth still needs lots of feedback. *cough*

I haven't actually played through Labyrinth yet, but interestingly enough, I *do* have it downloaded and installed. It's just, I'm in the process of playing through the entire game again - I'm attempting to go for all the steam achievements but we'll see if I can manage that - and I plan on trying at least when I beat the game again.

I really like the *idea* of the Labyrinth mod as an extension of the ending, a sortof extended epilogue or something, but I don't know how I'll like the execution until I play it. It's sortof flawed from the start for me because I really do not like the extended ending in the first place, and see anything that builds from it, as ultimately being flawed already - to the point I built up my own headcanon ending where that doesn't happen, same as I have pretty much written off ME3's ending in my mind.

But the gameplay of the mod could certainly be very interesting even if I'm not a fan of what's being done with the story. Or maybe I would like what's done with it, who knows? I do plan on playing it and posting about it though, don't worry - I just haven't done so yet.

Labyrinth doesn't build on the extended ending, it sort of adds another story in between before it happens - if you want to see it like that.
Also one thing to mention before I forget, I don't know how stable labyrinth is with the steam version (esp. first boss), so better get an update when you're done with the main game.

But yes, I don't want to *accept* the extended ending either - liking doesn't play much of a role here -, so that sparks a lot of creativity.
