Colorblind support
« on: July 05, 2010, 04:06:47 am »
I'm not colorblind, and I'm doing fine in the game; however, I've met two friends today and tried to convince them to try Aquaria, only to run into trouble during the demo because they're colorblind, and can't open the flowers/do other puzzles when they're just color-based.

As far as I can remember, there aren't THAT many things in the game that are solely based on color, but might it be helpful to provide a colorblind mode in which, say, the flowers would show the appropriate symbol needed to open them instead of just color? (also those fish that swim towards the color would need to have the symbol on them)

I realize in each of those situations you could just cycle the color wheel until something happens, but I imagine that must be frustrating to colorblind people.

Heck, if anyone's interested, it could be something simple enough to integrate as a mod.

Yeah, that's got to be a pain. (Particularly with the... well, I'm not going to spoil it for you.  >:D) One of the really longtime regulars here, Alphasoldier, is also colorblind (and tonedeaf, too--a killer combination, that), and he's previously mentioned how incredibly annoying it is to do the S.S. thing (which as previously mentioned I ain't gonna spoil for you yet) without any audiovisual cues whatsoever.

I think the easiest way to do this as a mod would be to mess with the script of each note-dependent entity in the game individually, since as you say there aren't that many of them. Here are the only ones I can remember:

1. the songbulbs,
2. the little fish,
3. the "huggy" tads,
4. and the S.S. thing.

I know that's not a complete list of things which react if you sing at them--not by any means--but those are the only ones I can remember which would actually penalize you for not being able to distinguish the full spectrum of colors. Am I missing any from that category?

It seems the team made good effort to show the symbols for every vital part of the game that you have to sing for. Some less vital parts might not have a symbol, but as long as you can sort of distinguish the colors, you should be fine. I can't remember, but did the whale puzzle (inside, not outside) have symbols? I know the lanterns didn't.

Color and sound only.

I'm not colorblind, but I could never really remember what the colors I had to play were in the whale. What I did was notice that the background music in the whale was startlingly similar to the series of notes that you had to play, and then just lit the lanterns in a fashion that made the noises in the right order. ^^

I've taken hours with the lanterns, was a real pain in the ***.

None the less, everything else was fairly easy to be done, even though I fully support an idea like this, I don't think it'll be worth the effort. Unless you're like... really good at modding, then I'd say go right ahead. :3
