It's fixable, you just have to make a 1% visible black halo around the graphic as said before by me here.

As in draw it? or do a stroke?
Because drawing it doesn't work. Not always anyway... it's f'ed up. I have lots of halo's next to black lines

There is a better method than using stroke...

^ There's also a version that lets you use a PS plugin to do most of the work for you.

^ thanks for that, but I'm having the same issues as the OP.
That is, when you save it as a .png, the Alpha mask just gets flattened or something, and you get no transparency at all (following the linked tutorials).
OP said it was because the tut was for .Targa?
In any case, tutorial is fine, make alpha channel, use plugin, but then when you save.. nothing. Might be something obvious  I missed?

But 1% visible stroke works for me now (:
Thanks alphasoldier, I was doing it wrong. Edit: It still gives a slight Halo at certain zoom levels in-game, on certain colour backgrounds, but oh well.

At least now I've learned lots about Alpha channels. Assuming it works like a Layer Mask. If not, I have learned nothing (;

You need to save it as a 32-bit PNG. (8 bits for red, 8 bits for green, 8 bits for blue, 8 bits for alpha)

Thanks for your help, but PS doesn't seem to do 32 bit png. What program do you use?

When I go to save for web or save as they both don't allow transparency.
Assuming I've done it right - Here's a pic of what I've done

Yeah, you don't get the option to save as a 16/24/32 bit PNG, you do however with Targa.

What you did however aerozol is completely right, I just don't know how you would get a save option for PNG.
When you DO put the mode to 32 bits (image > mode > 32 bits/channel) you suddenly don't have the option to save as PNG anymore. Only as .TIFF and some other photoshop extensions.
God sees and knows everything, but at least he won't gossip about it.

In My Paint (free) you can save as png transparency and it saves you the trouble of cutting the background. And no white haloes.
