Aquaria Config crashes when clicking Launch
« on: May 13, 2010, 08:13:33 pm »
I got Aquaria as part of the Humble Indie Bundle. I installed it, but Aquaria Config crashes as soon as I click Launch. Is this a known issue?

My settings are VSync on, fullscreen off, frame buffer effects off, gamepad disabled and 800x600 resolution. I'm on Windows XP. My graphics card is part of the Intel Extreme Graphics family.

Do you have the latest drivers for your graphics card installed?

I think so. Windows Update doesn't have a newer version.

I found a more recent driver here (from 2007), but the installer returns an error. Since the error message is in Dutch, I'll paraphrase it for you:

Quote
The driver that is being installed, is not validated for this computer. Ask your manufacturer for the correct driver. The installer will now quit.

If I go to Dell's website, I only find outdated drivers.

All of Intel's drivers do that the first time you move away from the computer manufacturer's drivers. ^.–

Can you see if you can download the zip file of the same driver, extracting it, and then manually updating your drivers with one of the folders in the archive (I can't remember which one it is)?

Alas, it seems that I can't do a manual install from Device Manager. Windows doesn't recognize any of the folders (I also tried subfolders) as a folder that contains a valid driver.

I believe there were two ways to manually install--you have to try both.

Did you try both the "have disk" method and the "manually install driver" method?

You mean the "I will manually select my driver" option?

That works, but is it safe to install the driver like that? The wizard says something about how if I select my driver manually I may not be using the best driver available. And graphic card driver is not something you should be messing with, since bad drivers can cause painfully frustrating BSODs.

Hm... remember back when you got that warning that said
The driver that is being installed, is not validated for this computer. Ask your manufacturer for the correct driver. The installer will now quit.
That warning also basically meant "You're not using the 'best driver available' for your Dell computer." So basically, your two choices really are between risk and... your outdated drivers. :S
Now let's hope someone else drops by and tells me I'm an idiot. ^.^

Sounds like no one's objecting. But if something goes wrong, I'll still be able to boot into safe mode, correct?

I don't know. :( I... guess. Save a copy of Dell's outdated driver somewhere just to be safe though, so you can get to it that much faster, though the windows dialog DOES have a roll back button... Sometimes I feel computer stupid. >_<

The new driver's working fine:

That's the good news. Here's the bad news: Aquaria Config still crashes when I click launch.

Intel's drivers normally do work fine. Hardware vendors are just paranoid. ^.–

Is it the config that crashes, or does the config disappear and then the game window pops up and then that crashes?

Nope, it's Aquaria Config that crashes. Aquaria Config doesn't seem to save my settings before crashing, because they always default to VSync on, Frame Buffer effects on, fullscreen on and a 800x600 resolution.
