Proof that the Nightmare segment IS winnable (found on YT)
« on: January 09, 2010, 06:44:02 pm »
Okay, so I was searching for Aquaria videos on Youtube. I saw some Let's plays, random gameplay videos, some songs, etc.

Then I found this:

Aquaria ~ Nightmare

Oh. My. GOSH. This guy is, like, the master of Aquaria. And the music he added is really sweet too.

NOTE: I did not make this video. The person who made it deserves all the credit.

Notes on what he used are in the description.  Do this guy a favor and tell him how awesome he is. :)

EDIT: The bad news is, the link above does not work anymore, he removed the video.

The good news is, he's now done a No-Damage run!

Aquaria ~ Nightmare: The Exorcism

Now, THAT is impressive.

It's not that hard. Just takes a lot of time.

It's a nice run, but I'm far from impressed.
The first segment were only two... or maybe 3 roaming enemies, could've easily swam through while avoiding bullets, taking out that piece in mere seconds.
What I just said however is what he did on the second spot, though then he started making erratic movements, having more luck getting through the bullets than skills. I've seen 3 close calls where bullets barely missed Naija.
Finally I was a bit disappointed that he didn't make a victory swim through the whole level.

So yeah, nice video and awesomely done, but I ain't impressed.
God sees and knows everything, but at least he won't gossip about it.

Oh, right. I forgot that most of the people here are veterans, while I'm a total noob. :)

Looking back now, I can definitely see a lot of flaws. He was pretty sloppy during the second part, and came very close to death.

Now, if he had done a no-damage run, that'd be something, but still, I applaud him for something I could never do.

BTW, thanks for the replies, guys. I appreciate it...

Hai. :D
That's mah video.  Glad you liked it.  I have to agree with Alphasoldier though, I ran through the level a bunch of times, some were probably better than this, but were more strategic and slow(Too slow, because the song wasn't long enough to fill them.)  This was full of close calls and me playing frantically, thought it looked pretty kewl, so I chose it.  Anyways, I'm gonna put up more Aquaria videos in time.

Suddenly preoccupied preparing for Mass Effect 2, which'll keep me preoccupied for a while as well when it's out, but once that settles down I plan on makin' a nice shiny gallery of Aquaria videos in HD.  Thought I'd chime in here, this is actually my first post on the boards I think.  Sooo.. Nice to meet y'all! :D

And a special thanks to Joey for being so impressed initially :), and as for a No-Damage run, eh.. I'll work on it, just for you!  But no promises.  <_<

Good luck on the Mass Effect 2 run, seeing it has way more than the original 2 runs through ( or so I heard ), it'll take quite some time off your hands.

And I think I talked a bit too much down on your video, it may have been a bit sloppy, but it's still impressive seeing it's harder than the "Gauntlet" in the body, more because of the fact that you have the dual form and items there, but it's still probably the toughest level.
God sees and knows everything, but at least he won't gossip about it.

Woo~  I'm back.  Haven't had much time to work on stuff...  But I came out of the shower earlier yesterday and suddenly had the random urge to try for that No-Damage run that I told Joey I might do.  And wow, after much trial and error (And I mean a LOT.  Spent most of a day, but it was worth it I think.) I finally did it.  :D  Looks great too~  Currently uploading to Youtube, the latest FRAPS version allowed me to record in RGB Lossless mode (Whereas beforehand it would create artifacts for some reason...) made a modification to my encoding settings (And as such, it results in a huge lossless video file), so it'll probably take all night.

I'm gonna be pulling the original video down since this one is so similar, and I wasn't satisfied with the visual quality of the original anyways (The settings I was using seemed to work well for 3D games, but not so much on 2D evidentially.)  Audio quality should be top notch, though at one point I had to overlap a second song on this one to keep with the overall flow of things, I did my best to make it sound somewhat natural but at one point you'll probably notice a discrepancy.

Anyways I wanted to give a heads up, I'll be editing this post tomorrow morning with the new link.  Hope Joey's still around to take a look.  :D  And now that I've got this under my belt, I'll probably get back to finishing my Aquaria playthrough (I'm systematically making saves before bosses and areas that I want to use for videos), and then start making more and posting them on my Youtube account.

Did you actually test this hypothesis?

Now this sounds like an awesome nightmare run, I hope it's not tool-assisted though.

I haven't, a friend of mine used the same settings and did though.  It looked better quality-wise as apposed to my Aquaria video.  I assume it's just more difficult to see the difference with 3D stuff when it's down-encoded because there's so much more going on, not sure though.

And to Alpha, no there were no tool assists, just a lot of retries (I mean a LOT.   Once I got started I got a little obsessed, especially in situations where I almost made it, I ate up about 10 hhours before I finally got through untouched, and there's still some close calls, some of which look pretty spiffy.).  XD

Anyways the video got up, but there's something seriously wrong with the way Youtube re-encoded it, I dunno what happened but I'm gonna have to pull it and re-upload.  :<  I work today so you probably won't be able to see it until tomorrow now, maybe later if I can't figure out what went wrong.

Update: Rencoded in time to start the upload again before I headed out to work.  :D. Gonna take about 9 hours though.  I did discover I used the wrong setting in one of the options, which may have cause the insane artifacting glitch the uploaded video had (The raw video on my hard drive is flawless).  But we'll see tonight.

Update 2: Hrm, didn't work.. Will do more testin' and post again when it actually works. XD

Update 3: Alrighty, it worked.  :D  It's processed and running, waiting for it to convert to HD version before posting though.  Expect the link in an hour or so.  :3

Old link from opening post is hereby down.  Enjoy!

Update: Fixed above link, comments and rating should be enabled now.  And wow, I just got a chance to watch it again in 1080p, and the new settings I used absolutely made the Youtube quality better.  :D

P.S. Sorry for hijacking your thread Joey! :O

I must say that you had a few luckies and close calls near the end.
At 2:39, 3:18 and 3:29 but after 3:40 you really showed how to play this game and you even made me gawk.

Amazing run man, THIS is proof that the Nightmare Segment is (easily) winnable. xD

Thanks man, I should have had a heart monitor that run it was beating like crazy by the end.  XD

Out of all the runs I did, this one was the most impressive, the fact that I succeeded ontop of that made me so happy. :D (Especially so, because I had some pretty impressive runs where I failed near the end, and it was disapointing.)

Anyway I'll enable comments and ratings tomorrow.  Although the video is fine, I typo'D the filename and I'm a perfectionist so I'm re-uploading it with a fixed one so I figure no reason to let people waste time commenting/rating a video that's gonna be replaced again.  XD. I'll update the link in my previous post when it's all done incase anyone's interested in doin' so, should see it tomorrow.

Wow, that WAS incredible. Yes, there were a few close calls, but towards the end you really showed how a master plays.

Someone should show this to Alec. He'd definitely be impressed.

Me? I'm Gawking.

Nice job man.
