Snow Leopard Graphic problems
« on: September 05, 2009, 06:32:43 pm »
Hey Guys at Bit Blot, I bought Aquaria a while ago and decided to pick it up again just last week. the only problem is that the graphics in the game are behaving really poorly, all of the images that are drawn onto the screen that are transparent and glow are just sold blocks of colors. also the parts of the game that have the currents that only allow you swim in one direction do not show up at all.

kind of sucks for every one who upgraded to snow leopard.

Hmm, have you confirmed that this is a problem across the board with Snow Leopard, or is it just on your machine?

I'm not seeing any problems on my mid-2007 MacBook with GMA-950 graphics (running Snow Leopard, naturally).

Hi, I've just downloaded the demo of this game and have just registered after hunting down a solution to this exact same problem. I didn't even know the one-way currents were *supposed* to have graphics.

I too am using Snow Leopard. I'm using a regular MacBook with an Intel GMA X3100 integrated chipset. I was considering buying the game, but I'd rather not pay for it if these sorts of graphical glitches mean I'm not getting game-relevant information. The giant blocky pixelated circles I can live with.

I'm on the same operating system described above.    I completed Aquaria back when I had leopard with no problem but snow leopard isn't doing so well. I'm having the same issues   :(
and I was so excited to be able to play the sacrifice mod

On the other hand, finally joined the forum!

I'm running OS 10.6.2 on a MacBook with an Intel GMA X3100 and am also having these problems.  I played the demo on a machine running OS 10.5 and didn't have these glitches.  I have screenshots of one of the opaque blobs and of an area with a current but no graphics to indicate as much, but I wasn't able to upload those screenshots.

I've been poking around in the gfx folder in the Aquaria package, and it looks like the alpha channel on the pngs isn't being loaded correctly.  Any pixel with an alpha value lower than 50% is not displayed at all, while any pixel with an alpha value greater than 50% is displayed but is fully opaque.  I imagine this is really mucking up the blending used for the light rays (the blue blobs) and the current bubbles; this is certainly why the graphics all have jaggy edges.

Unfortunately, this seems to be one of a whole host of problems related to the X3100 drivers that shipped with Snow Leopard.  This isn't a problem with Aquaria itself so much as it is a problem with Apple's drivers.  The best bet seems to be to wait to see if OS 10.6.3 includes driver updates that correct this problem.

I just installed the game on a friend's MacBook running Snow Leopard, and I'm getting the same issues. The light beams which are supposed to be transparent are now solid blocks of color. :(

Well this seems to be fixed as of 10.6.3. At least it is on my MacBook.

I never tried it on my Mac before, but I just grabbed the demo and tried it out on my Geforce 9600 MBP with OS X 10.6.3 and the currents look just fine.
