this game is MUCH more of a shooter than all the games i listed in my subject line. it is really hard to adventure in this game, because there is too much combat. the games i mentioned are more easy to walk around in than this. way too much combat.  a constant bombardment of thousands of enemy types, so much at times, it's impossible to keep up with it all. I'm in open waters II, and it's unbelievable. is there a less difficulty level?

I don't mind the puzzles but this thing is all combat. and tons of bosses, way more than quake and it's ilk. this is a hard combative first person shooter that happens to be a sidescroller.

I've never seen this much combat in a game ever and i've been playing games for 20 years. not enough save areas as well. you go 30 minutes at times, constantly being shot at, attacked by bats, eels, big fish, things shooting electric jolts that chase you for minutes.  you can't even get at the things shooting the jolts, because the jolts don't stop coming at you. it's ridiculously hard as far as combat goes. it really needs to be toned down.

they went over the top with combat. way over the top. I'm sorry but it's true. i shudder to think of the bosses that i have to fight yet. i fought one in the electric cave or whatever the level was called and it took me 4 hours to beat it. that's too much. i completed quake in less than the time it took to defeat that boss.

there are too many things to do at once as well. most of the time i feel like i need 4 arms and hands. switch forms, sing songs, but switch back quick because somethings constantly shooting at you.

i think i'm gonna shelf this. it's too bad. it started out manageable. now it's just over the top frustrating. they should really patch the combat. it's way over the top.

Aside from the bosses, and the mini bosses, you really don't need to shoot anything. You can just as easily move past almost any wild life, dodge their attacks and move on.  The shield song helps with that by deflecting most missiles.

Getting the tracking missiles to hit a wall is very easy by the way, since they can only move in wide arcs.

All but the final boss can be beaten in mere minutes. (and even the final boss can be beaten in less than 10 minutes) It may take some time to figure out how to damage it. But if you spend 4 hours attacking, then you may want to consider the fact your attacks aren't doing any damage at all. This has nothing to do with needing to shoot a lot, but with needing to fight more effectively.

You must not have played very many games in your 20 years.

If you don't like it, don't play it.  Why come here to complain about it?

You may have problems with your controls/settings?
I remember this one guy complaining and later we found out that he was playing with a touchpad...  ::)

As a very casual gamer (I'm only 23, but I've been playing games since I was like 3 or 4, probably), and as one who hasn't kept up with the new technologies, and who doesn't do all the shootery games... I still am a rabid Aquaria fan girl.  Yes, some areas were a bit hard for me, but I just slowed down or sped up.  Either ran away from it all, or let a few come at me at a time and blasted them to death.  Yes, some areas were a bit frustrating, especially if I didn't use my brain and try something new (bosses such as one you most likely haven't gotten to yet took me up to 2 hours, when I would then quit, and decide I needed to think about it after some rest heh).  Some bosses I defeated by accident, not even really realizing what I'd done that made them die.

Edit:  I'm a clumsy platformer (I enjoy running into spikes, even the ones in the first cave in Cave Story!), I fall off of platforms, I miss my jumps.  I am pretty bad at shooting games, because.... I tend to get overwhelmed by enemies.  If you want a hard shooter, go look for gameplay videos of Airrade Air, a Doujin cute-em-up...  that thing has loads of enemies everywhere O_O.  In RPGs, sometimes I do irreversable things, like get stuck in rooms, or forget the code to the door or whatever, and end up having to reset to get out.  I remember suiciding by Red Candle in the original Legend of Zelda game in a room with locked doors and me without any keys or the Magical Skeleton Key (and nothing but those shiny things that make it so you can't use your sword for a few seconds).  Just to give more background on my "gaming" abilities, heh.

I think its a valid critique that there is a lot of shooting in the game. In some cases the game play could have gone in different directions and potentially could have been more interesting to players not interested in blowing everything up or running away.

However, probably the best tact would have been more freedom, allowing players to take a more puzzley/explorey route over a more combat-oriented one. There is some of this in the game, but there could have been more.
