Isn't the duty on imports just to put imports on a level playing field with goods produced within the eurozone, which generally have had Value Added Tax applied at various steps along their production line? So if we were part of the EU, and had harmonized tax structures, you'd still see the same total price; it would just appear to be a higher "sticker" price, and less tax. (Possibly this is an overly technical issue for an average person. I happen to be heavily involved in politics where I live, have an M.B.A., and have taught economics in the past.
