HELP - Game crashing at loading screen
« on: February 24, 2009, 08:12:53 pm »
I recently bought the 1.1.1 version of Aquaria for Windows, and I can't play it at all. It crashes in the loading screen.

The debug.log file gives me these last lines:

With fullscreen off:
Code: [Select]
LOADED TEXTURE FROM DISK: [cursor-swim] ref: 1 idx: 8
pos [-1], file :gfx/cursor-sing
LOADED TEXTURE FROM DISK: [cursor-sing] ref: 1 idx: 9

Done
Dark Layer: using framebuffer
dark layer togle...
done

With fullscreen on:

pos [24], file :gfx/gui/minimap/waterbit.png

I've talked to Alec about it, tried turning off both fbuffer and darkbuffer on the usersettings.xml file, but still no go. I've already reintalled and updated my display drivers as well.

My computer is a Core 2 Quad/ATI Radeon HD4850 with 4GB of RAM running on Windows XP 32 bits.

I appreciate any help that can be given, as this is very disappointing. I've really been wanting to play this game in full.

UPDATE: I was able to make it work again by installing older ATI drivers. ;D

Damn ATI and their shitty driver updates.

alright , i am now using ATI's driver suite 9.2 with the file Atioglxx.dll from the driver 8.4 package
now the game doesnt crash at the " LOADING " screen that is some improvement...
but now i have from 0 to 1 FPS from the logos to the game ( i didnt actually tested in game but .. my guess is it will also be 0 to 1 fps ... )

the game works FLAWLESSLY on my
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ ( 2.6ghz )
1gig ram
sapphire x1600xtx
windows XP 32-bit SP3

and barely work ( if you can consider this working ... 0-1 fps )
on my
AMD phenom 64 quad-core ( 2.3 ghz ) ** i've try to run the game with just 1 CPU and it didnt change anything )
4gig ram
sapphire HD4850
windows vista home premium 64-bit

hey ... I can run FAR CRY 2 in dx10 all the graphics maxed out with antialiasing to 8x in my ati profile with a constant 40-60 FPS
but i cant run a 2d game with more than 1 fps ??? you kidding me ...

there is what i get from my debug log when launching the game and seeing it at 0-1 fps..

WINDOW ACTIVE
FMODEX error: 36: Unknown error code
FMODEX error: 36: Unknown error code
FMODEX error: 36: Unknown error code
FMODEX error: 36: Unknown error code
FMODEX error: 36: Unknown error code

FMODEX error: 36: Unknown error code
FMODEX error: 36: Unknown error code
FMODEX error: 36: Unknown error code
FMODEX error: 36: Unknown error code
WINDOW INACTIVE

i get about hundreds of those ( windows active & inactive are because i've ctrl+alt+del to hard shutdown the game )

so yeah ... must be a problem with the fmodex.dll files with ATI / AMD ...

Having same problem, crashes when loading.  The demo does the same thing.  If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate.

I purchased via steam
Intel Q6600
radeon HD 4870, Catalyst 9.4 drivers
3 gigs of ram
xp pro sp3

I've toggle config settings and get same results.  Debug log looks slightly different when switching settings.  This log is with following settings.
VSync=On
Fullscreen=On
Frame Buffer Effects=On
Gamepad Enabled=Off
Resolution=1680 x 1050

Here is last little bit of log.  I can past hold thing if it's needed.  Any help is appreciated.

w00t, solved it.  fixed it by turning off Catalyst AI.  I think this AI thing caused crashes in Dawn of War 40k.  Does anyone know what this feature actually does, I've never read up on it.  I think ATI is over thinking graphics, haha, get it? AI, intelligence, thinking, sigh...

Here are instructions on turning off Catalyst AI just in case anybody that is having this problem doesn't know how to.

1. Open ATI Catalyst Control Panel
2. Expand "3D"
3. Select "Catalyst A.I."
4. Check the "Disable Catalyst A.I."

"ATI Catalyst A.I. makes use of AMD's texture analyzer technology to optimize performance in 3D applications, while maintaining or even improving image quality. It analyzes individual textures as they are loaded to determine the best and fastest way to display them.

ATI Catalyst A.I. includes application-specific detection for various games and games engines such as Doom 3, the Half Life 2 engine, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004, Splinter Cell, Race Driver, Prince of Persia, and Crazy Taxi 3"

I've not experienced any issues with Aquaria and the AI, but that may just be my computer.

Bingo

It's A.I

I turned it off only for Aquaria using Ati Tray Tools.

However, I remember playing the game with an old version of the drivers and Catalyst A.I turned ON.
I also think I launched the game, just after a system reinstallation and with Catalyst A.I on... but maybe I'm wrong and ATT was not installed, so no AI then.
