Game controlls blow
« on: February 19, 2009, 12:02:57 am »
I dont get more than 3 minutes into this game and suddenly I'm confronted with new powers with no tutorial how to use them, it would be pretty strait forward if the damn thing would FIRE in more than one direction, trying to aim never works because you need to use the mouse or gamepad to swim but even when you do stand still enough the damn curser never wants to cooperate moving back into place behind you where it will be the least use unless you constantly and forcefully keep sliding the reticule forward, is this a joke? do you actually expect people to play with this kind of shoty controls? I'd be like if you tried to sell a game that permanently read an analog sticks point of rest incorrectly!

I think you are referring to the dream sequence and the point of it was to disorient you, it was a horrific vision of the future. You'll gradually be stepped into the controls, the whole Home waters section is part of the demo which is basically a tutorial level. I'm sorry but not sure what you mean about the gamepad controls and the cursor not co-operating, but your criticisms on the game's competence would have more credence if you took time to spell check.
Ellie: Are they from the future too?
Sawyer: You told her?

Not another one ...   :-X Lolwut, your problem is definitely a glitch / [result of judging the game on the first three minutes], and you need to keep that in mind before you insult Alec and Derek's lovechild.  ;)  Also, look through the readme file in the main Aquaria folder (search Aquaria if you can't find it immediately). If every possible solution fails, use the mouse + keyboard combo. It's the best way to play Aquaria IMO.

A series of questions might help clear up things:

1. a) Question When you start Aquaria and enter the options menu, is auto-targeting on? b) Why? That makes sure that the shots home in on enemies (having to aim is usually an option).

2. a) Do you work for the developers' rivals?  ;) Just joking, if you're wondering...

3. a) What gamepad do you use?

4. a) Describe more thoroughly how you fight the cursor.

[I'll add more questions as they come to mind.]

I hope your problem is solved - Aquaria's control system is a beautiful thing to behold (when it works).

Also, here are the opinions of players with functioning gamepads/games:

I played almost the whole thing using a USB game controller (a Saitek P2500, for the inquisitive).  I just left auto-targeting on, and swimming/aiming etc was no problem.  Being able to use an analog stick for moving about seemed infinitely easier than using the mouse or keyboard, evevn if I did have a bit of a time with button-function overlap.  Also, since you're using your thumbs instead of clicking, you can pretty much kick the crap out of anything and everything with energy form shots, even unenhanced.  The whole game seemed quite easy, although still immensely enjoyable.

Quote
I used a gamepad and found it very easy to control. Though I did need to use third party software to map the form hotkeys to buttons on the gamepad. For the beginning portion of the game I didn't use hotkeys and it was more challenging, since I had to stop swimming to sing. Which can be dangerous depending on the situation.

[EDIT]: Inkblob's right about the dream sequence - you won't see a difficulty like that again for a long time, and it's just a harmless preview (i.e. nothing happens when you die).

3 minutes into the game :o Yes that is Naija's glimpse into her future and yes you can control the firing a little but that's all, but after that once you have the ability fully the use of the controls becomes almost second nature to you just give the game a little more time huh? :D

Actually, I would say that this is THE hardest part of the game, no food, no other forms, only energy form with your starter health.

And to comment to the OP... I think you need a better mouse/computer/brain, because I'm fairly sure these problems don't lay in the game itself.

It's not so bad when you are expecting it - go slowly, throw charge shots around corners, and you can make it through all the way.

Don't take this kind of comment to heart Alec, really they should of known better than complain after only 3 minutes into a game, it's really not very clever of them.. :-* :-* :-*

I just finished the game using a Logitech rumblepad2 controller. It worked perfectly! You can't say that about all games out there. Well done!

Note! They haven't been back to reply to our comments, to embarrased perhaps?

Perhaps an angry kid who just wanted to vent and then forgot all about his post? Most people would ask for help, not freak out like that.
