Help!! Loser at Jumping
« on: June 02, 2008, 12:31:38 am »
I have nearly completed the game; have all forms, full life ring, and am rippin ready to defeat the Final Boss in all his 5 forms, but!  I don't have the lost memory from the veil because no matter how I've tried to work it, I cannot frickin get up to the top of the Sun Temple.  I tried and tried to no avail from outside the Temple with speed soups, climbing and jumping, from inside the Temple by reaching the Glass Tube and attempting to climb up the glass tube, etc. and - zip!!  I constantly fail.  I only have a track ball mouse on my PC and I gotta say some parts of the game have been a real mess thanks to the twitchiness of the mouse...  I can't finish Simon Says either for the same reason.  Mouse mess.  I had to settle for getting the Ruhk egg from the bubble above the Turtle Cave rather than the one up on the ledge in the Veil 'cause I can't get any control on the placement of the plants Nature Naijia shoots or her jumping afterwards.   Is there NO other way to get up there??? I really want to finish the game properly... any advice??

There's a quick video.  Hopefully you'll understand how to do it.  If you're problem is literally performing the action, due to your trackball, there's not really any tips that will help.  If you REALLY can't do it though, I could do it for you if you send me your save file.  (Of course if you prefer the latter, I would ask you contact me via AIM, I hate all this upload/download back and forth nonsense).

I am having a hard time myself on the pure arcade sections:

- I tried the 'Simon' game for 30 minutes, cannot get it right with my mouse, just not enough fine control to do them in the SHORT time limit. The highest I managed is 7 notes once. Trying to find a new mouse which will do it, just for this game, is not an option. Maybe THAT part requires a gamepad, not going to buy one just for 1 game, either.

- I managed, with a LOT of attempts and difficulties, to climb areas where I have 2 opposite wall near each other, so I got the memory from above the Sun temple, and the egg from the climbing chimney East from it. Again, difficulties due to >lack of< mouse fine control. NO potion used or needed, but a fair amount of luck.
By the way, does anyone know if that Rukh respawns, so that you can (theoretically) get more eggs from there?

- I do all my climbing and jumping with either Beast form (for VERY close walls) or Nature form if there is enough place for a spike AND jump on it from below. It is definitely NOT easy, and I hate every minute of it. I am basically an RPG player, bought this game from the RPG point of view, and absolutely NOT an arcade games player.

As for jumping itself, I am stuck in 2 places. The Beast form appear to have the strongest jump (higher or farther), but I still cannot reach the Bubble where I see a spiked helmet (my high jump ends just below that bubble). And there is an area left from the Sun Temple, above a save stone, which I cannot jump high enough to get onto the ledge.
In both cases, I seem to be short about the same jump height.
There are potions for a lot of things, but none is described as meant to improve jump ability. However, a forum search in the past few minutes ( I was here for that) told me that a SPEED increasing potion should do the trick.
So, going back mow to try that.

Ruhk respawns every time you leave that 'zone' of the Veil. go into the sun temple, leave temple, egg back.

soup, yer. soup helps with speed, speed helps with jumping.  this game isn't ~ too ~ arcadey, after awhile the combat is more of a choreographed dance, tho many of the bosses I can't manage without snacks  :D

Soup helps ONLY when jumping out of the water, on land jumps aren't higher or further or anything, so that has no use.

By the way, maybe, just maybe, use a normal mouse for just that part.
God sees and knows everything, but at least he won't gossip about it.

Soup did the trick for jumping (out of the water, OR out of a water bubble).
Also managed, from the Urchin equipment bubble, using a speed +2 soup (+1 not enough) to land close to the Rukh that is up there. Killed it, but could not get close enough to get that egg.

Aw that's so sad.  You orphaned it and didn't have the decency to finish the job.  I'm kidding of course, but yea soup will only help when jumping out of water (since it increases swim speed and breach speed is based on previous momentum).  As for walljumping, it's frankly MUCH easier than in say, Metroid.  You have a good length of time once you cling to move your mouse over (and slightly up) and click again.  Remember, the mouse is what you will jump TOWARDS so you don't have to actually aim at the wall at all.  Just aim WAY past the wall and at the right angle.  That will get you there just fine.  If you want my video above you'll notice that most of the time I'm not aiming at my target but far beyond it.  Lack of precision shouldn't have too much of an impact as long as you can judge angles properly.  That gear jumping is probably the hardest jumping segment you'll find in Aquaria.  Although I know alot of players had trouble with a second bubble-to-bubble jumping area later in the game.

Heheh, Wall jumping in here easier than in Metroid? Far from if you ask me, Wall jumping in Metroid is simple, in Awuaria you have to aim and, which is hard with non straight surfaces. And the most fun thing is is that I'm making a... I was making, seeing it's been on hold quite a while, a jumping mod for Aquaria, I bet you would LOVE it. ;p

But indeed, bubble to bubble is hard seeing you shoot out so damn hard, then getting into the next bubble, which isn't large, you shoot through it, and after 3 bubbles, you lost control.
God sees and knows everything, but at least he won't gossip about it.

Actually, in that second bubble section I had a perfect run my first try.  I literally kept up my momentum jumping from bubble to bubble.  I was going so freaking fast by the end my heart was pounding from excitement.  I havn't been able to do that again in all the times I've tried it.  One of those one-shot wonders I guess.

Lucky! I did it, without too much stress, but it wasn't so quick either. >.<;

I dunno, I really like the jumping in Aquaria (the cogs were so awesome!) and they didn't seem so impossible to me, just a fun challenge as a sort of break from all the swiming and 'choreographed danceing' (man, thats a cool way to put it). :D

Thanks for the reply; I was not able to view your video as the site seems to be requesting pay registration to view/upload/download files.  From the file name/location though, it looks like you were trying to show me how to jump the Gears inside the Sun Temple.  If that is so, I did that and got up to the glass tube no problem - I just was never able to climb up the tube... *sigh*  Still trying...

Huh? The tube is filled with water, you don't have to climb there...

And rapidshare is free, you just have to type a code then.

If the tube is filled with water then there is something wrong with my game copy -- I got up to the top by jumping on the cogs and there is a water bubble just at the bottom of the glass tube, but the water does not go all the way to the top and I did not get any memory there... I am stumped. :(

The tube does not have water in it. At least, not all the way up. But if you can do the cogs, then it shouldn't be hard to climb the tube. Just remember that you don't have to click where you want to go, just in its direction. That way you don't have to move the mouse so far while wall-jumping.

without surgically analyzing what everyone is talking about, that tube going up to room with the window has no water in it at first, but then you monkey with the gears and it's full of water. I learned my wall jumping chops on that tube while trying to figure out the infernal sun temple puzzle  :'(
