I guess I can agree to a point, since I think a lot of the time I can tell a good game from a bad one as well, even if it's a little outside my sphere of influence, but I don't think that's nearly reliable enough to be called journalism, no offense to your personal method.  Reviews are subjective enough as it is, being merely opinion pieces that interpret facts as much as they present them, and moving any further away from objectivity to me is simply dangerous.

Dominic above I think demonstrates this pretty well when he says he can acknowledge that a game outside his scope is good, but he still doesn't think he'd be the man to review it.

Like I said before - I only get to review games that are within my usual "scope" - all reviewers are assigned certain genres. =)

When it to being objective: my main proof that I'm being objective is that I write my reviews independently and yet my scores always fall into the overall score range on sites like gamerankings or metacritic. Although I'm usually closer to the bottom of the range since I have a very critical view of most games. =)

Hello! I'm Tom. I wrote the Eurogamer drivel.

I agree with your poster who called into question its depth, but another poster accurately summed up why it was as it was - my remit usually varies based on the context and profile of a game. This isn't ideal, and I should have liked to talk about Aquaria a lot more. As it was, I tried to get as much in as I was allowed. I also talked about it on One Life Left (www.onelifeleft.com), a British radio show that is also podcast on the web. I am a big fan.
