Why is there no support for 1280 x 1024? Theres support for 1280 x 960 but I thought for a 17" monitor x 1024 is the standard

That's actually not uncommon, though it can be a little aggravating if you're playing on an LCD where 1280x1024 is the native res.  I fall into that category.  I honestly don't know why this is sometimes the case, but I've run into numerous games that only list 1280x960 as the nearest option.

Most wide-aspect monitors have an option somewhere to just display black bars on the sides and maintain the proper aspect ratio.

On Nvidia (Geforce) graphics cards it's a setting called 'Flat Panel Scaling' in the nvidia control panel. Or run it windowed.

(Don't actually run it windowed, it deserves your whole screen)

I'm gonna work on the whole black bar/widescreen thing at some point! :)

For now its best to use a windowed mode if you're using a widescreen monitor I think.

just tried windowed mode, and while not perfect, it sure improves things.

I will love you long time if you can sort widescreen though.  :-[

I must say, though, that at high resolution, the game is simple beautiful.

It really feels like gliding through a painting.  What native resolution are the actual bitmaps?  Or is it all procedural?  I've yet to notice a single pixel or aliasing artifact.

i just wanted to stress the request for other resolutions. the x960 doesnt bother me very much, but there is definitely a need for w i d e s c r e e n-resolutions   ::)

i'm not sure if there is any change, but you can change the res via the init.cfg file too. haxx0red 1280x1024 in there and it seems to work - but actually i didnt see much of a difference. the pixel jumps at x960 are just not very noticeable..
and before you guys try and haxx0r widescreen-resolutions in the init.cfg - it gets pretty messy and kinda has the effect magic-1 on the whole game ;)
