I'm just stuck

I love this game and I don't think I have much trouble going through the levels... its just I'm used to linear games that make it clear where you are supposed to go. I've been looking for where I'm supposed to be for a good hour now and I'm completely bored. Could someone just tell me or hint to me where I'm supposed to go after killing the boss in the energy temple? After reading through forms I heard something about kelp forest but I don't know where that is.

Open Waters is the "hub" zone which most others link to and the Kelp Forest is closer to the sun. I usually do Mithalas before the Kelp Forest though; it just feels like a smoother transition in difficulty levels. If you'd like to get there just keep heading right and look for "man-made" stuff; it should be pretty easy to find but if you're still stuck I can give you more detailed directions.

I guess you are back in Home waters? Then you need to find a pearl and a place to put it in to open the way into open waters. Look on the right/south-right side of the map.

Well if i recall after the energy boss there is a pet to be had. Have you fought a giant nautilus yet? Lower left side of the map. If you don't want to  bother on the right side of the map there is another pearl gate. The pearl cavern is guarded by a stealthy octopus. look around you'll find it all. that will at least get you out of Home waters.
