Multiplayer possible?
« on: May 26, 2010, 03:58:57 pm »
I noticed in the install that there is a config/MasterServers.vdf file with IPs and ports listed.  Are there any multiplayer components that were perhaps planned/built but are not used for some reason or does this file exist for some entirely different reason?

Since I started playing this game I envisioned how much fun it could be to play it with diablo style multiplayer :)

That would be some Steam file. There is no such thing in the regular build. To see the actual Aquaria files, you have to go to Steam\steamapps\common\aquaria.

As far as I know multiplayer on one computer would be possible (with one player controlling an entity via the key board etc) but no one has really tried it. Networked multiplayer seems out of the question without some editing to the code; which I suppose people could do if we had enough people willing and talented in that sort of thing. Especially now that the source code is being released.

Same here, I was also curious why the file was in a Linux version when steam only runs on Windows and Mac.
Linux to play Aquaria and for power, Windows for my dev stuff, Chromium for school surfing. I can't browse the grade system >:D. Join me on the bit-blot IRC channel.

Maybe it was a secret feature they started working on but gave up? :3

No, it was definitely a steam file, I recognized it.

Maybe they accidentally copied it while copying it over. If you rename the file, does the game still run?

Hmm... It's not in my non-Steam Windows installation, but it is in my Linux version. I might try to find references to the file. AFAIK, Steam does not run on Linux (though in the past Valve did include some Linux engine files and etc, into the L4D demo).

I think that steam supports linux dedicated servers, but that wouldn't explain the file in Aquaria, if it exists...

Had a look at the Mac package from the HIB, and it also had the file. Both releases are icculus builds, so maybe Ryan somehow had the file included. It's definitely not used by Aquaria.
