User/permissions based linux crash
« on: May 05, 2010, 11:52:09 pm »
System:
Kubuntu 9.04 64bit (KDE 4.2.2)
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT, with nvidia driver v 180.44

I installed aquaria to /usr/local/lib/aquaria, owned by root.  (This is normal!)

Executing as a normal user, the screen flickered a few times, then aquaria hung with a mostly black screen and a bit of garble.  I dropped into a tty and killed aquaria, only to find my graphics stuck in 800x600 (easily fixed) and my KDE session hopelessly corrupted (also easily fixed, just needed to get KDE to start a new session)

I changed ownership of the aquaria files to my normal user, which allows it to run properly.

This is avoidable, but pretty serious, since in linux it is normal to have applications owned by root, with permissions allowing unprivileged users to execute.   Other users following SOP will likely fall into the same pit.
