Expanding the Aquaria Mythos
« on: August 22, 2009, 10:29:18 am »
For those who've not been in the loop, Aquaria Sacrifice has been released, a mod that, to say the very least, is a fantastic new take on Aquaria.  It's a prequel that's more adventure game style than the metroid style of the original, with a heavier emphasis on story.  While it lacks some of the production values of the original(voice acting, and the like), it's a great addition to Aquaria, and another reason to get your feet wet once again

Anyway, the point is, this game greatly expands on Naija, Mia, and many other characters whose pasts have only been hinted at in the main game.  This gets me to thinking...what are people's opinions on fans, sort of taking the world of Aquaria into their own hands, story wise?

This is something I especially want Alec and Derek's opinions on, do you have a set story for Aquaria?  Would you negate or approve of certain fans additions to the story?  What are your overall views on the idea of expanding the history of this world you've created?  Would you use some ideas from fan mods if you ever created a sequel, or perhaps even recruit some modders into a sequel team?  And how would this expanded Aquaria through the story driven mods affect said sequel, if it ever happened?

Have I blown anyone's mind yet?

I'm just curious I suppose, about Aquaria's future, or in the case of this and other fan made prequel/sequels, it's past.
I'll keep asking for an Aquaria sequel until we get it, the sequel to the greatest Indie game of all times, and one of the greatest games period.

I believe Alec has said before that he knows the story in big lines, but also loves to hear other people their opinions and possibilities.

None the less, I'm actually working on a fanfic, where Naija's also a kid. I hope it'll work out with Sacrifice, seeing TheBear has made quite a set story there. I'm still arguing with myself if I should do it during that mod or just before it.

Third to that, I think it's going to take more than just modders to actually make a new sequel. Seeing there will most likely be new gameplay, like on the island the kid of Naija and Li went to.
God sees and knows everything, but at least he won't gossip about it.

I'm not so sure about whether modders can't really make a sequel.  I mean, sure they'd meed someone to bring them together, from a loose knit group, but someone who's willing to put in the time to make a mod like Sacrifice has persistence...and in the end, persistence is something you want in this kind of business.  Don't want someone who's going to quit when the going gets hard a couple hundred thousand lines of code in.

Still, I wonder if Alec and Derek will expand on the history of Aquaria either with a book or a game, or whatever.  what will they call canon, and what will they leave to interpretation...that's something i'm really interested in.
