Dutch version of Aquaria
« on: April 23, 2009, 12:16:46 am »
Hey guys,

I am new to the forum but not for translations and testing, currently I am interested to take part of the translation of the Dutch version of Aquaria. Last year the small group of a handfull of people was translating the strings and subs of the game, unfortunately no one confirmed the completion of the translation.

To speed up the process, I would like to gather a small group of people who are interested in completing this task. The Dutch translation must be done accurate to the origional game and must be tested in game for any flaws, can anyone who are interested contact me so we can complete a full working translation for the upcomming version so it can be used for a younger of non English understanding group of Dutch players?

Hiya,  a Dutchie here.
We've had someone here before, a dude who was set forth to become a translator, great job, good thing, but he sucked at subtitles.
None the less he gave his try to the subtitles, as have I, I once completed them all but my computer crashed later on, I only had a backup of about... 6 or 7 files done, so I had to restart. I did this with joy, seeing it went pretty well the last time and I even got help now, but then his subtitles were send to me with the most twisted and ludicrous subtitles, not matching what Naija says at all. A lot of them were close, but not always for subtitles.

Either way, I came about half way through merging his ludicrous, but sometimes good, subtitles, seeing his grammar was still better than mine.
So, here's a file, with my adjusted  Dutch subtitles, the guys subtitles which I haven't implemented yet, and english ones for reference. Folders being called Dutch, Stefan and vox
So, the Stefan folder contains his translations which I haven't implemented yet in my translations.
The Dutch folder has everything but "naija_fallenmithalastatue.txt" to "naija_naijaawakes6.txt" translated, which are 34 files.

Take a look at it and return here. ^^
God sees and knows everything, but at least he won't gossip about it.

Hey Alphasoldier,

Thank you for your addition, currently I am quite busy and checking the translations with mine. Hopefully I can upload a test version shortly, I will keep this threat up-to-date with the latest changes...

Kind regards,
John

I've translated all the subtitle files, the stringbank, the help files and the ingredient descriptions.
Also added an additional textfile with some UI translations (UI Translations.txt)

Unfortunately I didn't know a Dutch word for 'Flourish' in the "help_start.txt" file (as it has a different meaning than what is
usually meant with the word 'Flourish'.)
Nor have I translated the ingredients (ingredients.txt) yet, because I don't know what parts
of that file I should be translating.

Here's a direct link to the file

I hope people will take their time to read through my translations. I've checked the translations twice as to
make sure I've used the best grammatical constructions as well as punctuation. If you find
a mistake somewhere, please let me know.

@ Alphasoldier: I've now bought a legitimate copy of the game and have less of a temperament.
I'm actually very happy about my subtitle translations, even though you will probably still think they're not literal enough.
But by translating some things literally, they just don't sound right or can't be read fluently in Dutch.
That's why they have to be translated differently. Of course you can always criticise sentences and I will look into them again.
Which will hopefully not lead to an endless discussion like last time.

Please don't question the contraction of words in Dutch, I'm 100% certain of it being correct.
For example: Energievorm instead of Energie Vorm.

I was wondering which parts of the ingredients.txt file you're supposed to translate? Could anyone please enlighten me?
And is it possible to just change the duration of a subtitle file. For example if it ends at 0:10 can I just change that to 0:15?

Thank you,

Stefan

In ieder geval,
alvast bedankt

Stefan

Yes, it's possible, just change the numbers, it's simple as that.
Second to that, I'm not sure how I should react to your post, if at all.
You made presumptions of what I might do again and they ain't very nice.
God sees and knows everything, but at least he won't gossip about it.

I'm also tinkering a little with translating Aquaria. I'm not nearly as far as AlphaSoldier or Xerevan, but I thought I'd try to both improve my English knowledge and to give input to the others.

The only problem on my side is that I haven't finished Aquaria 100% yet (I kind of don't want it to end - does that make sense?), so I'm thinking about restarting with my own subtitles up until the point where I stopped playing. :) (Which is somewhere near the end - I've been through the Abyss.)
Just when we thought we've seen everything...

Wow guys, it is going great I would say...

Unfortunately I didn't had any time to finish the translation, I was caught up by my work so I guest it would be better to focus on existing translations. I hope to help you guys more and compare some notes when I an finished on my current project...
