Yeah, I just went through that part in the abyss. So everyone else here is asleep, it's dark, I have my heaadphones on. I did have the sun form, but I was fighting the light fish when that voice came out and it freaked me right out. Last time I've been that freaked out was reading the part in Lord of the Rings about the Barrow Downs late at night (and the Dead Marshes, too). The voices in the Sunken City are pretty scary, too. Horror movies don't scare me the way an involving book or video game can.

Then for the love of god, don't ever read House of Leaves.

Seriously, that one scene is scarier than the rest of the Abyss put together.

I found it scary but my horrors are differen't.. I do not like confined places and I find underground tunnels the scariest, so reading a description of a spelunker crawling through tight tunnels is enough to make my stomache churn even writting this  :o

Duct tape is like 'The Force'. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together

FALSE.
Everyone should read House of Leaves to better understand the nature of fear and reality. Nice post though  ;)

Hmm, I think I'll take that as a challenge. I'll have to look it up.

I didn't think I was all that scared of dark, confined spaces until I went spelunking with my dad once (my idea, too). It's not because it's dark that you easily get lost; it's because you have to think in three dimensions, and it's surprisingly easy to forget which way is up. And all of a sudden you realise the place you were trying to get to is too small to crawl through, and you turn to go back and you can't remember whether you took the passage up, left, right, or down. For a moment I thought we'd gotten lost in what seemed like a fairly small cave, and I was so relieved to finally see the light coming from the entrance.

Your description of spelunking sounds a lot like House of Leaves actually, hehe. You should definitely check it out, it will probably give some resonance to your experiences in the caves :)
